Mammoth of a beer being sold for $1,000 per bottle

James Walton of Storm Brewing reached back into the ice age for his latest beer creation.

And you may have to dig into your savings to buy a bottle.

There are ten bottles of Storm’s Glacial Mammoth Extinction being sold for $1,000 each.

At 25 per cent alcohol content, Glacial Mammoth Extinction is a beast of a beer but it’s the bottle itself that is the work of art.

Each one of the glass bottles, created by artist Richard Marcus, is affixed with a mammoth tusk pendant.

“(The tusks) are by-products of gold mining. The artist found a bunch of it from Yukon mining operations years ago. It’s legal ivory … no mammoths were killed just for this ivory,” Walton joked.

http://blogs.vancouversun.com/2015/12/0 ... er-bottle/

The beer itself is damn good. I had it over a year ago at Ailbi Room and I imagine it has only improved since then. I'll probably pick up a half liter growler of it, the beer alone without the bottle is "only" $80/ liter.

I'm having a 3 year old Dieu du Ciel Isseki Nicho tonight. Wasn't sure if this would age gracefully but its held up pretty well. Not my favourite style however.

Bought my first Ontario supermarket beer yesterday - a nice fresh Nickel Brook HeadStock IPA. Even got carded though it's been a long time since anyone thought I could pass for 18.

Great lakes must have decided they don't care about clear beer. Probably want to turn it over quick when they're going to the LCBO too, so they don't give it enough time in the brite tank.

Having a couple of IPAs tonight from Stalwart Brewing. Their Dr Feelgood is as good as any Ontario IPA found at the LCBO. Their Zigzagger is not as good. But I might be drinking one that's not so fresh which is weird because they only released it a month ago.

Just back from BC where I tried a lot of their craft beers and found the BC scene to be really overrated. Didn't try a single exceptional beer out there. Lots of breweries and lots of places offering local stuff instead of the big brewery crap but the beers themselves were okay to mediocre. Not a single IPA that could compare to the stuff that Great Lakes is putting out although I didn't drink any Red Racer since it's easily available here and the only really good BC beer I've had.

I tried Fat Tug from the LCBO, thought it was rather meh but just figured I'd bought an older bottle. Tried it multiple times in BC and it was meh there as well.

The craft beer in Alberta has been so so thus far, but Phillips Atomic Buffalo Smokey Red Saison is absolutely phenomenal.

Oh wait, it's from Victoria...

Yes Predo, they make strong sours. Not often Goses, but there are plenty of Gueuzes and especially American Sours and Sour Saisons that get up in the 8% range.

Look for anything by Crooked Stave, which should be around most of the US these days. If you're still in TN look for Blackberry Farm, though I don't think they do much over 6-7%.

i assumed so with what I remembered from belgium. stuck to the blond, bitter, and strongs that trip. apparently one of the charms of goses is that they are weaker. pff. nancys.

Goses and Berliner Weisses are like the session beers of the sour world. The big boy sours are Gueuze and Americans.

meh. different people have different tastes in beer. i think that stouts and porters taste / feel like shit, but i would never suppose that they are horrible just because i don't like them.

sours just have a unique taste that isn't for everyone or for every occasion. i think it's fine, but wouldn't want it to be my go to beer.

Meh, a nice citrusy sour wit beer after a day of skiing, or a dark cherry sour to finish the evening are alright in my books.

The biggest advantages with sours IMO are the bigger flavour with lower ABV.
