Bratislava wasn't too bad. I imagine it really sucks in the warmer month when the tourist show up. Went ice skating tonight at the Christmas market in Vienna. Was the best skater. THO the kids with the tblades gave me a run for my money. Actually had Bauer vapors as rental skates...granted they wanted to give me the buckles first and I told them I wanted laces.

It's like half off everything versus Vienna. I'm at some coffee house where to people next to me are speaking Russian. And I think my waiter is russian too? I might be caught in a trap.

this is what i said that bratislava is. it's a cheap weekend get away for austrians to do purchases. sort of like what border canadians do in the us when the exchange rate isn't so high.

It was a quaint little place. Kind of reminded me of Salzburg a bit with a blend of Prague. Currently on the train to Budapest. I was supposed to be in a six seat compartment but luckily the Austrian conductor lady let me know the last cab was open seating. That would've been awkward.

Today's did you know:

Dentistry appears to be by far the largest economical activity in Mosonmagyaróvár, with approximately 350 practicing dentists as of 2015.Worldwide, this is the highest number of dentists in ratio to the total population. The reason for this is found in the demand for low-cost dentistry by Austrians, who have been crossing borders to Hungary for decades.

I've heard the Mosonmagyarovar philharmonic plays at the Mosonmagyarovar strawberry festival in Mosonmagyarovar and is lovely.

Really, my only lasting impression of Bratislava was being in the city centre with my brother and having a hooker walk up to us innocently and asking

"Cigarette?

Cigarette?

Sex?"

It was so desperate that it was comical.

I think it varies based on personal experience. I'll give you an underrated/overrated:

Underrated

Madrid
Brussels
Florence
Edinburgh
Dublin

Overrated

Paris
Rome
Amsterdam
Prague
Venice

About what you expect: German speaking countries

I always have difficulty comparing English speaking countries to non-English speaking just because the experience is so different.

But top 5 is probably

London
Madrid
Edinburgh
Dublin
Paris

Was thinking about this: think Dublin and Paris get booted for Vienna and Budapest.

London
Budapest
Madrid
Vienna
Edinburgh

Also will take Rome off my overrated list, just dont go in the peak season. Would add Berlin and Strasbourg to the underrated list. Since theres a bunch of broads haters for Berlin.

I know this is subjective but Edinburgh or Budapest over Paris? Edinburgh has trouble eclipsing Glasgow let alone Paris.

Rome on any overrated list? Granted the number of touts and other assorterd bothers in places like piazza Navona or around the coliseum is annoying. Public transportation is terrible particularly Termini station which is beyond appalling.

But you can’t argue with the architecture, the history or the art. It’s not spectacular on the culinary front but if you do a little research you can eat well.

I ate better in Rome than I did Paris. Paris' is overwhelmingly committed to the Bistro, to it's detriment. Great takeaway though, especially desserts.

Rome is my favourite destination to date, with the caveat that I went in December and even then the crowds were annoying. I can imagine it would be awful in the summer.

I’ve been to Rome but always in December and in March. Its always busy but manageable. I can imagine it being less than stellar in July (only a git would go in August).

Food wise a little research or simply following the locals goes a long way. If one decides to eat in a restaurant in the shadow of the pantheon that has an English menu advertising CocaCola then they deserve what they get.

I have a completely opposite appreciation for the Parisienne bistro. Burger joints were starting to get popular last time I was in Paris. Fuck that noise, give me duck confit at a bistro.

I’m with Predo on this. I’m also with hf4 on this.

Was last in Rome 3 1/2 years ago in July and didn’t overly enjoy it. Crowded, overrun by tourists, chaotic, hot, ugh. Also had trouble finding very good meals. Wasn’t bad but difficult to find very good. Had gone in April some 10 years prior. Enjoyed it much more. Less people, less chaos. Food also seemed alot better 10 years ago. That is either my imagination or my standards changing or it adapts to tourist season or it generally went from more authentic to more bland.
