Portugal

Post #1 by MP » Wed May 03, 2017 10:43 am

So booked two weeks in Portugal in mid July with just Mrs. Plan.

Our Itinerary is looking like:
Lisbon 3 nights
Algrave/Salem a 3 nights
Evora
Nazare 2 night
Coimbra
Douro Valley
Porto 2 night

Any thought tips? Planning on renting a car.

So you think Seville and Grenada would be better than Nazare to Porto?

So Lisbon, Algrave, Seville, Madrid, and Porto? Or is that biting off too much in two weeks?

Dog, did you go to the Algarve beaches? Are there any where toplessness is banned? How about beaches near Lisbon? Asking for a conservative friend who doesn't like explaining things to his kids.

I preferred the beaches in the lisbon suburbs (estoril and cascais) to algarve, though. Not for the beaches themselves, but the people. Lisbon beaches had locals and algarve beaches, as you may have seen in my rants, had british-german euro-trash.

My friend is usually ok, but yes, it this case he's being weird.

I actually didn't mind the Algarve, although I went during Euro2004 so maybe it was different than the usual crowd.

The crowd seemed fine to me, but whatever. I enjoyed my time in the Algarve. Hated the drive between Lisbon and the Algarve, but enjoyed my time there.

Lisbon has been pretty great so far (other than Freedom mobile fucking up my unlock code so I wasn't able to make my Vodafone data card work).

The green wine is particularly refreshing. Mrs. Plan is currently KO'd from it a 7pm...

So my Lisbon routine is wander around town all day in 30+C weather, then head back to the apt at 4ish, blast the AC, strip to my boxer-briefs, and drink beer until dinner a 9pm.

Pretty fabulous.

Right now, I cracked the window, about 200m away there a rooftop wedding reception blasting tunes, and I'm sitting here in my underwear, watching them and the sunset over the main square...

I'm on vacation too. So far today I've wired a light fixture, nailed up some boards claw took down in 2014, hosed down the AC and hung a couple of sets of blinds. Plus some general organising.

I am about to start drinking beer until a late dinner though.

I'm now in Seville. It's 40C, and I'm drinking watery light beer to hydrate before tapas... Also, I thought the Algarve was quite nice. Had a nice beach house with a short walk to a nearly private beach. The next day we went to Salema and got a small cabana and loungers on the public beach because we couldn't take more sun.

Porto is pretty nice. I'm finding it completely different than Lisbon. Yes, it's mobbed with tourists, but most of them are Portuguese, Spanish, French or other Euros, but unlike Lisbon there's only a few brits.

The city has tons of old churches (if you're into that kinda sight seeing), and most of the restaurants are pretty good. The river front is a great scene. The odd thing is down the main stretch from the train station to the river, like every 3rd or 4th shop is basically abandon, but loads of construction going on. I've heard the Portugal economy is doing better, and leading to some significant developments do to increased tourism, so I expect some big changes in the next few years (I counted like 23 tower cranes from my window in Lisbon, similar here in Porto).

The far side of the river has all the port houses. With lots of tours and tasting opportunities. We went to Taylor's which had a fantastic list to try from. Mrs. Plan has fallen for the vinho verde (green wine) in a big way.

Today, we did a river cruise on the Douro into the wine region, which IMO is definitely worth doing. Nice a relaxing day taking in the river valley landscape.
