Spice

Post #1 by NyQuil » Fri Mar 06, 2015 12:21 pm

The spice extends life.

The spice expands consciousness.

The spice is vital to space travel. The Spacing Guild and its navigators, who the spice has mutated over four-thousand years, use the orange spice gas, which gives them the ability to fold space. That is, travel to any part of the Universe without moving.

The spice exists on only one planet in the entire Universe.

A desolate, dry planet with vast deserts.

Hidden away within the rocks of these deserts are a people known as the Fremen, who have long held a prophecy, that a man would come, a messiah, who would lead them to true freedom.

The planet is Arrakis.

Also known as....

Dune.

I can recall a strategy using their speedy Trikes called Raiders (one of their unique units) to harass spice crawlers. They were so cheap that you could build about 10 or 12 of them for nothing.

And they were so fast, that you could drive in, attack the crawlers and then drive out as soon as any escort units did anything. Constant harrassment and eventually you could destroy the crawlers.

After destroying everyone I played with the strategy, I told friends about it and tried to beat the strategy myself.

I never could do it. I tried my own trikes, tanks, trying to lure the trikes into my base. Nothing.

That Ordos trike unbalanced the game. We weren't allowed to use Ordos or at least not that strategy when we played.

/nostalgia for Dune 2/Dune 2000 over.

No.

Most people I played never bothered to build trikes.

The non-Ordos version was crap.

Is it worth watching the doc?

I'm a huge Herbert / Dune series fan.

I liked the look of the Lynch Dune, obviously not the execution. The casting was pretty well done. I can't see anyone but a regal Jürgen Prochnow as Leto or Max von Sydow as Liet Kynes. Patrick Stewart as Gurney Hallack.

The Space miniseries (Dune, Messiah, Children) is quite faithful to the books but obviously doesn't have the kind of budgets that big movies have. It's also fun to see a young James McAvoy as Leto Atriedes II.

I imagine it would be like an interview with Joel Schumacher during development of his Batman movie.

His passion for the project is endearing but yeah...it would have been terrible.
