Never heard of this movie so I decided to look it up.

It's rated 17% by critics on Rotten Tomatoes (50% audience score) and it's a 5.7 on IMDB.. but there are 28 pages of user reviews. And most of them appear to be very favorable.

What the fuck? Is Adam Sandler writing reviews on IMDB now?

Rotten Tomatoes panned it but my kid wasn't feeling well and he saw the commercial and asked if we could watch it. It's as formulaic as one would imagine a movie about aliens attacking the world in video game form and format. That said I loved Galaga and Defender and all the other games they had. I loved the music they were playing. They basically just made a silly movie that made no pretenses about being anything else centered around video games from my youth.

Thanks, but I don't care about the movie. I'm interested in the IMDB user reviews.

edit: :punchballs:

Finally saw Bridge of Spies. Easily one of Spielberg's better films. Of course the old man can't help himself and becomes cloyingly sentimental at the end.

The opening scenes are excellent cinema. Lovely attention to detail with the mise-en-scene.

Both Hanks and Rylance are really good. Abel was of course a jew, which is why this Soviet is portrayed sympathetically.

The Martian - so much enthusiastic praise for this yet, the climax is ridiculously over-the-top, just eye-rollingly bad. One improbability tacked onto the next. Also the "reaction scene" trope is just nauseating. Here we watch people celebrate Matt Damon's rescue in the nasa control room, in Times Square and in China. That's no better than shit like Independence Day. I expect such lowbrow pandering from Roland Emmerich, but not from Ridley Scott.

If they had Randy Quaid drive a plane into a spaceship I would maybe feel differently.

Finally I can't think of a bigger sellout than Jeff Daniels. Another crusty white guy in charge role.

Listen To Me, Marlon - finest new film I have seen this year.

Best of Enemies - pales in comparison and with little to say, but still time well spent / Gore Vidal was a great troll.

I don't get the Martian praise. It was literally just watching Matt Damon solve his way out of one problem after another. Completely linear and shallow.

And watching Donald Glover play the beyond-cliché idiot-savant made me cringe. Why include him? The best was when he hacked that server and his computer displayed something like "Server Hacked!". lol. High fives around.

Mars did look cool from behind my 3-D glasses, but this movie was a basic bitch.

Slant Magazine also hit it on the head when they referred to the dialogue as Sorkin-esque. There's an emerging Sorkin school to Hollywood screenwriting now, it seems.

Taking your points in order, handling a complex set of interconnected challenges by creating one solution after another was the whole point. It's an ode to science. That's how it goes. I appreciate that about the movie, but that's a reflection of personal taste and interest so it makes sense that what is a positive for me will be a negative for others.

I've never seen Donald Glover in anything so I don't know how he normally acts. I thought he was less aspergery than he should have been. And the supercomputer scene is apparently reasonable. The author wrote a PC program to calculate orbits and stuff when he was writing the book and he couldn't do anything except simulate what a ship would do based on direction and duration of burns he guessed at. When the book was a success he asked NASA guys how they handle the insane orbital mechanics math that creates 10th order differential equations and seem impossible to solve. They said, "nobody solves those, they're too hard. We just simulate it." Except their simulations take way more variables into account. So the Rich Purnell character would probably have a quick and dirty bit of software for coming up with courses and then would need to run it through the big machines to make sure it would actually work.

The screenshot is "Calculations Correct". In the real world he would do that from his office, and the screen would say something undramatic like "Simulation complete." and then he would run it through an analysis tool that would report "Maximum deviation from original course: 830.27 meters" or something, and then he'd have to explain it. But movies have to show, not explain, so you put him in a datacentre and have the computer tell him it's correct. Meh.

Spectre - absolutely nothing interesting happens in this movie. Why did Bond parachute from that car and somehow elude Dave Bautista's line of sight in the process? The whole thing is just brainless. And the villain is straight out of The Simpsons.

The stuff connecting the villain to Bond's childhood is poorly developed and superficial. I did not care.

The Intern plot summary: Robert De Niro's lifeless corpse is cruelly paraded by some fascists, disemboweled, set on fire, and in a stirring climax the interns collectively urinate over it.

Particularly tragic if seen back-to-back with Taxi Driver.

Crimson Peak - Visually this is absolute perfection - a pastiche of Bava, Has and Lipsky. People complaining about the storytelling would probably also say the same about Bava and should be dismissed. This is not great art, but lovely gothic horror nevertheless.

Ghost effects are at times too on-the-nose for my liking.

Filmed in Ontario, featuring a supporting turn from Bruce Gray of Traders.

Sicario - more Denis Villeneuve dogshit. Isn't life just grim, terrible, confusing and disappointing? Oh the horror and the pity of our modern existence!

The story is uninvolving. This existential meandering leads you exactly to the same place where you began. There's nothing new about this character and her struggles. I was however reminded of the much more historically interesting Narcos.

Also politically this will not make a dent. No one cares about America's crimes. We have shit to do on our smart phones.

2 is horrible and makes everything around it suck. Just like 5 brings everything up.

But otherwise I enjoyed 1 and 3. 1 especially. Just ignore the Gungen crap and the mediclorins (sp?).

The Jedi arcs, which is the main point of all of this, are well developed. Much better than in 7.

So I think I'll rank it as the 5th best in terms of story. The imagery was good. Maybe the best. Really didn't need the 3D. That was almost annoying in fact.

Though we'll see how the next one goes. If this was a large scale introduction- like it felt for a while -then maybe it rises.

Saw The Gathering Storm, an HBO/BBC flick from 2002 or so, with Albert Finney as Churchill. Terrific production and a welcome break from the horror show that is the Oscar bait of December 2015.

Really liked Trumbo. Excellent dialogue and direction. Didn't buy the Kirk Douglas side of the story, while Edward G Robinson was treated unfairly. Overall though, this and Bridge of Spies are among Hollywood's finest product of this fall-winter Oscar season. Naturally both have bombed at the box office.

Some other stuff I have seen:

Brooklyn - Very Jim Sheridan-y. Nothing special outside of Saroise's interesting face. You will forget it almost immediately.

Creed - I don't understand the accolades for this. It is nice to see Sly again, but there are no new ideas to surround the otherwise competent production. Did not like the young boxer, neither the character nor the actor, and the romance is unconvincing with a poorly written female character.

Spotlight - A pleasant two-hour diversion, which should be a strange thing to say about a story that concerns itself with a molestation scandal.

The Big Short - I admire the various devices they used to tell a complicated story, in order to keep the lay view attuned. Very interesting for this reason. But I don't think this is terribly subversive - is anything anymore?

Irrational Man - Woody is charmingly out of touch. Philosophy is no longer glamorous - certainly not to millennials.

The Revenant is a great looking film that I enjoyed.

I finally saw The Imitation Game. A very ordinary and forgettable film, but not bad for a biopic. Cumberbatch was good. The historical inaccuracies don't really bother me, as they were in the service of crafting a story. But since they were going to invent so much, the filmmakers could have been more inventive. Go big or go home, I think. Either stick closely to the real life story, or play around and make something creative that people might actually want to watch again after Oscar season ends. I give it a 6/10.

I also saw The Hateful Eight. It's a spectacular failure of a movie. Those are always worth watching and discussing. Bloated and heavy-handed, but engrossing. Jackson and Goggins are great. 7/10.

The Big Short is ok. Its mostly cool because I enjoyed 2008 as an investor (I had just taken my money out and missed the whole destruction of world makets thingy).
