There's an area of Hamilton that looks exactly like the neighbourhood in Home Alone. I'm sure it was a rich area when it was built (1920s), but hard times through the 90s and it's all lower middle class families now. 6 bedroom homes with 1/4 acre lots, but seriously straight from 80s/90s American film. It's always been a bit unnerving there for that reason.

This is the home alone house, I think. Speaking of John Hughes movies.

In my post I said 'Uncle Buck', but I was thinking of Planes, Trains and Automobiles. I love that ending where Steve Martin finally arrives home with John Candy. The wife is there and they cut to a shot of a turkey. Reagan-era America looked pretty good.

We call other flicks action-driven, but this thing literally never went more than two minutes without action.

I guess you could argue that this is just a continuation of what John wick started in that way, so still not really revolutionary.

And the POV framing was already carried out in the Doom adaptation with a more transparent dovetail from videogaming, albeit to truly dull effect. Just watched that scene again now and it's laughable.

Not sure if there are any other POV action films. The mode could be re-used in creative ways possibly. One problem all of the critics had with Hardcore Henry was the lack of plot. Personally, I thought the plot was just fine how light it was. But giving the character a voice and pursuing more drama that's pertinent to transporting the audience into a POV may be worth exploring. I seem to remember everyone thinking that giving your character Ray Liotta's voice in Vice City contrasted well with the voiceless Claude in GTA III.

Doom was just so bad though. Can you be that bad and still be groundbreaking?

I agree about the plot. I guess it would have been a little nice just to get some more background on the bad guy, but otherwise you just had enough to string together the action and a fun little twist for the Sharlto Copley character. Any more would just have distracted from the whole point of the movie. I mean it's not like there was going to be some really satisfying, compelling plot drawn up that would have really added to the concept. This wasn't supposed to be The Matrix shot first person.

I remember this being on TV once in the late 1990s. TV guide made an error by labeling it as adult content.

Being in my teens, I was pretty disappointed.

Finally saw Inside Out. I really enjoyed it. The consensus is correct. It ranks up there with the second tier of very good Pixar films (A Bug's Life, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, the Incredibles, Toy Story 3) and gets bonus points for not being a sequel. But it's not quite on the level of the first two Toy Story films, Ratatouille, Wall-E or Up.

8/10

Easy A - 9/10
Near-perfect for what it is.

The Lego Movie - 6/10
A cute and well-executed piece of garbage with a nice ending.

Notorious (1946) - more talky and boring than I remember. Some nice shots. 6/10

Mirage (1965) - really beautiful b/w cinematography, but everything else stinks. Gregory Peck is a very cardboard, Leslie Nielsen-style actor. 4/10

I saw these back-to-back and it's interesting that roughing up an irrational woman was in style for so long.

Hardcore Henry was great. I am impressed by how fun it was the whole way through, and the humor really worked.

The critics got this one totally wrong, and it is obvious that many of the haters aren't gamers. One critic criticized Sharlto Copley's acting, even though his character is clearly a gaming archetype.

Some of this reminded me of Borderlands, but more bloody.

Night Moves - 6.5/10

Quintessential 70s New Hollywood loner story. The premise is very clever: Gene Hackman is a detective who does not detect - a fractured character in the spirit of European art cinema. The film however looks and sounds awfully trashy. The pacing is bizarre and the soundtrack does not suit the mood. I can only imagine what Polanski would do with something like this - while the dialogue is intentionally artificial, the film mostly plays this straight, including Hackman. I was hoping for something stylistishly noirish, a la Chinatown. Oh well.

Melanie Griffith is in the buff at 15. Thought _dong might want to know.

London Has Fallen is exactly what you should hope it would be. I mean the premise and plot are as thin as can be, but the action was great, the pacing was good and the acting is better than most movies like this get. No regrets.

Point Break on the other hand, oof.

I thought it was poor. I am a big fan of disaster movies, but somewhere along the way Hollywood forgot how to make them with the right sort of humor. Gerard Butler is just dreck.

And is there a worse, and comparably smug, actor than Aaron Eckhart?

I am cautiously interested in the Independence Day sequel. Happy that Goldblum and Brent Spiner are back, but it's too bad that the Will Smith replacement is that bland white guy from one of the Expendables films.

Hollywood has been churning out many bland young white guys in recent years and they are increasingly difficult to tell apart. It's frustrating.

The first film struck me as an uneven satire that made fun of American exceptionalism. Rewatched it recently and still think so. I loved it. But I bet the new one will play it straight and probably suck balls.

Haven't seen the new Ghostbusters yet. But I did re-watch the original for the first time since I was a kid. It's reasonably funny but pretty sexist. No wonder it's become a focal point for shithead trolls trying to preserve the testosteronal purity of the American comedy from these uppity chicks.

Lasted about 12 minutes into Independence Day 2. Three comments.

1) Why is the color palette so shitty-looking?

2) Will Smith's replacements are just depressingly bad.

3) Emmerich made a few decent films when he followed the Spielberg rule: two story threads, one for sci-fi or supernatural occurrences, and the other a family drama. Works very well, especially if written and filmed skillfully. Always start with the latter. The first ID followed this rule. Here they begin with some stupid military bullshit. Time to retire.

Central Intelligence - 8/10. Surprisingly solid. Lots of laughs. It's one of those movies that doesn't try to be epic in any way, and instead just keeps hitting solid singles and doubles. Good story. Great chemistry.

I've actually seen it twice now (forgot I promised my oldest I would take her) and I enjoyed it even more on the re-watch. This might just go on the annual seasonal re-watch list, like Home Alone is for X-mas movies, except this one is a good summer movie.

As many others have pointed out, Jason Bourne is very derivative. Vincent Cassel himself is derivative.

There is a lack of realism to the technology and in many of the stunts, which bothered me a bit. I can suspend disbelief up to a point. Some of the things Bourne does with technology make no sense, particularly the way he tracks Alicia Vikander at the end. Not to mention that CIA's capabilities in this film are just sci-fi. At least Deja Vu (the Tony Scott film about surveillance) embraced itself as sci-fi.

Also, the Las Vegas strip is not this long.

Jason Bourne was just a montage of security card swipes, calling in the extremely ineffectual "Alpha and Bravo" teams and continuously asking for updates on where "the asset is".

"Bring in the asset."

"Where is the asset?"

"Asset is five minutes out."

"Contact the asset."

"Draw a bath and prepare a nice meal for the asset."

"Tell the asset about that episode of Friends where Chandler and Joey grow mustaches to be more like Tom Selleck."

Not to mention, for a clandestine organization, they cause about $57 million dollars in damage worldwide. And how did Jason Bourne basically walk into a casino replete with video surveillance everywhere when they already proved they can use every camera in the world to run facial recognition? Because he was wearing a baseball cap? Don't get me started on the impressive structural integrity of his Dodge Charger relative to every other car that collides with the SWAT van in the chase sequence.

Furthermore, how many old Hollywood actors get roped into this franchise to be the "tough bureaucrat guy in a suit" with apparently no knowledge of the fact that every previous tough bureaucrat guy in a suit has ended up in a body bag?

Tommy Lee Jones: "We're going to eliminate Jason Bourne".

Computer Guy who Hasn't left his Job for the entire Series Sitting in the Back of the Room: "How about we just leave Jason Bourne alone?"

Tommy Lee Jones: "Excuse me?"

Computer Guy who Hasn't left his Job for the entire Series Sitting in the Back of the Room: "We've already tried three times and the boss always ends up dead. Maybe we just let this one slide."

Tommy Lee Jones: "I think we're due."

Computer Guy who Hasn't left his Job for the entire Series Sitting in the Back of the Room: "We might want to give Robert Duvall or Robert Redford a call. You know, just get 'em prepped for the next one."

oh, and d_k, can you shed any light on how Suicide Squad relates to Men's Rights?

I realize it's not your point, just hoping for insight from someone who seems to observe the fringes of the culture wars more than I do.

The only thing I can think is that men are drawing inspiration from the way Joker treats Harley Quinn. But that seems like a disservice to the men in question because it's such a lame point of view. If you're inspired by an evil shithead who badly mistreats his girlfriend and is about 50/50 on killing her for kicks then they're not exactly modeling their relationship goals on an ideal that is reasonable, healthy, or morally acceptable. It might be attractive in some ways to have that much power over someone, but I can't help but think it's attraction is primarily about masking a deep feeling of weakness.

The Men's Rights and White power stuff is actually getting more prevalent in comic book fandom. The success of the Marvel movies has brought a lot of new women and minority readers into comic books. As a result, publishers, especially Marvel, have been making new books with female and minority heroes targeting those new readers. There is a small vocal segment of comic book fans who are furious about having to now share their historically white male medium.

The dark and gritty DC movies were expected to be "real" comic book movies, as opposed to Marvel's cinematic universe who sold out and pandered to non-comic book fans, especially women, by making movies with humour, bright colours, attractive male leads, and too many female and minority secondary characters.

Just wait until Black Panther and Captain Marvel come out. It's going to be a fucking shit show.

On the topic of comic book films, I finally saw Deadpool a couple of months back. It will date very quickly, and so never be a 'classic', but in the moment it was good fun. 7/10

The rest of the comic book films I can more or less do without. Changing a serial or episodic story, with huge numbers of interwoven characters and stories, into a quick-and-dirty feature film just never satisfies from a storytelling point of view. So you're left with state-of-the-art combat sequences, special effects, and some quips and one-liners, but a a gaping hole at the heart of the film.

They keep saying that Black Widow can't carry her own film, which blows my mind, because I think she's one of the more interesting Avengers characters in existence.

I'd go see it for sure.
