Yeah its really not hard if you are patient and have opposable thumbs. Even drywallers can do it.

I 100% believe you are. I don't know you, but know who you are. I see it working for other people all the time. There are different types of homeowners. You're educated, detailed and can be hands-on. Will read online and watch youtube to learn the process of something and once confident that it's understood, you'll find your materials and take your time and in the end do a pretty darn good job at it.
Doing drywall full-time is another story. There's a reason that 85% of dry-wallers are drunks or drug addicts. The other 15% are both.

You're grossly overestimating intellectual types. We can prep all we want in our heads, still doesn't mean we can do it. Not necessarily a manual capacity thing, more a lack of experience thing. Shit goes wrong all the time when doing renos and you need to have seen it/seen similar before to adequately work through it. Makes me want to burn the place down, most of the time (that was back when I still tried).

I don't mind putting up board, or mudding & taping, it's the bloody sanding and the dust that drives me crazy.

So an irrational fear of screwing up something a high school dropout is capable of doing?

Yes, informed by a general dislike for manual labour that dictates that I don't put in the required effort/time to learn.

Re: Homeownership Thread
The fact that the work is largely done by high school dropouts is a big part of the problem. Every field has incompetence, but incompetence in construction seems to be very high. Relatively hard to hire a non-idiot -for work I don't like to do.
But, yes, at my level an experienced idiot > me for most tasks.

Could be a "type of intelligence" thing too. I know a few that couldn't do well in school but are very anal/good at manual work. I'm not much of a "process" intelligence type. More of a "concept" guy. If that's a thing.

I mean, I do stuff. But it has to be intellectual/conceptual. Talk to me about process and my eyes glaze over.
I blame the undiagnosed low level/borderline add.

My daughter appears to be the same. We're both wonderfully disconnected from the practical world. My wife is wonderfully practical. We're the majority of the household now.

Re: Homeownership Thread
So twice this month we've had record rainfall and twice our basement has been sweating up through the cracks... A small amount of water that I simply mop up.
The house is 100 this year, don't think I'll bother with a sump or any digging down there. Sometimes it's better to just mop shit up twice a year. Not like it's sewage.

At least I didn't mention the bucket in my attic catching rain water. That one is just because I have no money though...

Re: Homeownership Thread
Yeah, I've weighed a few options. The roof is way to high for me to get on. Around 30 feet. The shingles are about 10 years old so when I'm done my program and get a contract I'll worry about it (august). I wouldn't mind having someone sheet some ply up there over the plank or something.
Luckily it's a walk up attic that I can access every time it's raining and check the drip. Its very localized. Good airflow up there, so no rot or anything. Just a pain is all.

Re: Homeownership Thread
I will this summer. It's vintage insulation. As in no insulation. Basically open rafters with blown in pink stuff between the rafters to insulate our upstairs. Incredibly efficient house. Our funace barely has to work, and our downstairs is double brick so even on hot days it stays cool until around 1pm and then the a.c. kicks in.

Re: Homeownership Thread
Good to know about the planks, Claw. I usually assume older is better on account of the Heritage work I was doing. I just thought I'd get better strength and less risk of puncture out of ply.

Re: Homeownership Thread
Nah. Plank is great. It breathes. It is spaced for expansion.
If you do need to change some. Rip 3/4(or whatever matches thickness) into plank and use that for repair.
But i reject the current tight build mantra. That envelope rots from inside out. Its just the law.

I agree. The worst part about doing this myself is it takes so long for me to get through the three cycles of sanding. By the time I'm done we'll have lived through two weeks if dusty bullshit.

Get an orange tarp, something bright. Something obvious. Neighbors will love it, you'll drop their assessed property tax value.

My neighbours are already working hard to devalue our homes... Their yard is where tent trailers and broken patio furniture goes to die.

Salvaged tent trailer canvass it is.
I never said it would look good. But if done clean it can look "under construction" till it fades in the sun.
