Re: News from Around the NHL 2
Good News for anyone who has ever had the displeasure of watching a game on ROOT Sports Pittsburgh: Steigerwald will no longer terrorize your experience. They hired Steve Mears as their now hockey play-by-play guy. I am not familiar with Mears, but I can still say with 100% confidence that this is an improvement.

At the very least, he's one of them; similar to Jack Edwards.
They just have a way of adding salt to an already gaping, infected wound. And that's not a compliment. They're fucking assholes who appeal to the lowest common denominator.

As bad as it looked for Fleury, his D was playing awful in front of him. He was hung out to dry on a couple of those.

Pickard v. Lundqvist...

So, is Laviolette the first coach to go the SCF with three different teams?

Apparently there are four:
Dick Irvin (Chicago 1931, Toronto a couple of times in the 30s and Montreal a number of times in the 40s and 50s)
Scotty Bowman (three times with Blues, five times Montreal, Pittsburgh 92 and thrice with Detroit)
Mike Keenan (85 & 87 Flyers, 92 Blackhawks, 94 Rangers)
Peter Laviolette (2006 Hurricanes, 2010 Flyers, 2017 Predators)

I like all the "Why did we fire Lavy?" hot takes coming out today ...
Lavy is a great coach, but it was time ... it was time the previous season. He's a closer (and a very good one), not a developer.

Can't disagree with that.
But I will always maintain that he did the best he could with the goaltending situation being what it was.

Eh ... He does shoulder a good bit of blame for the Bob/Bryz debacle.

No shit. Should've been fired in time to let a new coach have a full offseason or given more than 3 games...that was classic Flyers shit decision making.

Absolutely not, Jester. (Told you this already.) Holmgren's shitty, gargantuan finger-prints are all over that mess.
And we'll leave it at that because I don't think anyone here wants to revisit his goaltending management decisions from 2009 to 2012.

Holmgren shoulders a great deal of blame as well ... but I fully agree with Meltzer (who discussed this today) that Lavy's ridiculous management of Bob as a rookie in the playoffs directly contributed to Snider demanding that Holmgren make a major play (for Bryz). All three deserve significant blame for that mess ... just like I think Lavy deserves blame for (along with Pronger) managing the locker room dynamics of the squad rather poorly as things progressed. My bona fides in shitting on Holmgren are well established, and I liked Lavy here, but he had his notable warts.
I mean, seriously, go back to those playoffs and imagine Lavy showing a bit of confidence in Bob and how that might have altered history. As said, he's a very good closer ... but he has limitations when you don't have a ready-for-prime-time roster. A weakness a lot of elite coaches have.

It's not like berube would have used that time to install some grand master plan, though

True that. I was thinking they might have found a better candidate on a more traditional timetable.

Not really missing, but I think Lindros' collapsed lung incident also deserves a special mention. You see, it's only completely fair for one franchise to get four of the best players to ever play the sport and for another franchise to have one of the best players in its history die and another almost die at the height of their careers.
I guess the Pens also have the story of Michel Brière which is also exceptionally tragic.
