I had never really learned just how much I have come to hate Trevor Linden as when I started seeing these election ads.
When he comes on screen at the end and says I Vite..... Do you? I just want to fucking throw something through the tv.

If you watch any highlights during the NHL app those are the only commercials that play. I want to throw my damn phone across the fucking room when his stupid face comes on.

Pedan's agent: I sure hope Pedan gets qualified.
Benning: Here's a 300% raise in the minors and an NHL salary above your qualifying offer.

What an utterly strange and ultimately pointless signing.
Jim Benning is the master of the unforced error.
Thought for sure we would be turfing him.

I gave the GM a pretty easy ride in this edition, as he is but a pawn in the Game of Middle Fingers:

Re: Set the tires alight! The 2016-17 season is smo(u)ldering
Welp, the guy who was offering purportedly insider information around the draft last year is saying that Dallas wants Mittelstadt, particularly because they know Vancouver covets him, and has also confirmed (to the extent he is accurate, obviously) our suspicions that Benning has Liljegren ranked as his top defenseman.
It seems an increasingly solid bet that the Canucks are going to be repeating what they did last year – acting like the smartest guy in the room while they let consensus top player available slip to a position that no one ever thought he'd make it to.

Yeah, we sure wouldn't want that McDavid/Matthews type of skill.

This is our GM:
https://www.barrietoday.com/national-sp ... aft-645405
In a time where you probably have the best chance to improve your team by being creative, Benning is basically throwing his hands in the air.
https://www.barrietoday.com/national-sp ... aft-645405
Still, wariness lingers for the domino effect of trading a player who might be picked by Vegas simply to gain an asset.
"The problem in that is you're going to lose one player no matter what right," Benning said. "So if you have five defencemen, say, and you can only protect three so you trade one defenceman off for a draft pick or young assets and then you're going to lose another defenceman to Las Vegas and then all of a sudden, you're two D down, you know what I mean?
"So you're better off just taking your lumps, know you're going to lose a player and just move on."

To be fair, not a lot of teams did much of anything. I am pretty sure there were a lot of "backroom deals" going on with Vegas.

Re: Set the tires alight! The 2016-17 season is smo(u)ldering
I'm more referring to everything going on right now. I.E. looking at the protected lists and making deals by having Vegas claim someone the Canucks want and swinging a deal. As well as potentially protecting your own team too (though there's not much of value on the Canucks unprotected list)

Or trading for someone like Vatanan or another young player instead of potentially losing him for nothing. The Canucks had so many spots available to protect and instead wasted spots on Gudbranson, Sutter, and Granlund.

Re: Set the tires alight! The 2016-17 season is smo(u)ldering
George McPhee took Sbisa. The worst player exposed by the Canucks. The most expensive player exposed by the Canucks. Somehow worse than Megna and Skille. Had actual contributors and players who could be excellent call-ups in Gaunce and Biega. Took Sbisa.

Plus he has Methot, Garrison, Emelin, Stoner, McNabb, and Schmidt as better left side defenceman. He had Schlemko too, but he was traded this morning.

Re: Set the tires alight! The 2016-17 season is smo(u)ldering
I think the plan is to trade Methot and anyone else. My theory is that they probably expect to trade so many of the "good" players they acquired that Sbisa's contract will help them just get to the cap floor.

Because they are tanking and all good players will be used as trade chips. Its a win win. Not a stupid. This makes them cap compliant after trading the good d

When's the next expansion draft? I'd like to get rid of Sutter too.
EDIT: Also, lol @ the idea that they're tanking. Oh, they're not making a run this season, then?

Hopefully this means the end of Delorme and Weisbrod. And Benning has to me next, right? Next offseason at the latest? Please?

I wonder who is going to be on the draft floor for the Canucks today. It could get mighty awkward.

Seems like a solid pick but I though Juolevi was a good pick as well and he was pretty underwhelming last season.

Juolevi went farther off consensus, though, because there was a "Big Top 5" (and if anyone was to break it, it probably should have been Keller).
The consensus this year was so much muddier, and the analytics guys were high on Petterson, so I'm definitely receptive.
It sounds like Benning could have traded down (rumor is that Las Vegas got wind the Canucks didn't want Glass at 5 and pulled an otherwise good offer for a 2nd rounder to switch) but at least he didn't go as much off the board as last year.

Re: Set the tires alight! The 2016-17 season is smo(u)ldering
There were a few mock drafts that had Juolevi going where the Canucks took him. I think the problem is that his upside is a solid unspectacular 3-4 defenseman.
The Petterson, Gadjovich, and Palmu picks all seem very very good. Like some of the best I've seen in a long time. Palms, especially, is exciting. Extremely skilled, already is playing at an appropriate weight for the NHL, produced fantastic results, and is going to play against men for a year or two. He tracks perfectly as the type of player that beats the odds in the late rounds because he has one glaring deficiency but everything else is in place.

I don't know about Palmu being both 5'6" AND an overager, kind of seems like having two decks stacked against you, but yeah, with a pick that late it makes sense. He could still conceivably grow some. Certainly beats the hell out of blowing a pick on Mackenze Stewart.

100%. Late picks are exactly where I want them trying zany stuff with huge upside, not "safe" guys they can sign for free at any time to be Utica 3rd liners or 5-minute goons.

Re: Set the tires alight! The 2016-17 season is smo(u)ldering
Jim Benning Benninged all over himself this free agency. Signed a bunch (5!) of middling to bad players to more than they're worth.
Sam Gagner - 3y, 3.25AAV
Del Zotto - 2y, 3AAV
Nilsson - 2y, 2.5AAV
Burmistrov - 1y, 900kAAV
Wiercioch - 1y, 650kAAV
The following forwards are now signed to for next season
Sedin, Sedin, Eriksson, Horvat, Granlund, Baertschi, Megna, Boucher, Gaunce, Goldobin, Boeser, Burmistrov, Sutter, Dorsett, and Gagner.
Edit: I forgot Dorsett was on this terrible team.

You also forgot Rodin. We also have Dahlen signed to an ELC which I guess will burn the first year in Sweden.
Why did we sign Gagner? What purpose does he serve? Very confusing signing.

We signed Gagner to a 3 year 3.15m per deal! I did forget Rodin but I don't seen Dahlen anywhere near the NHL next season.
None of these signings are guys that can be flipped at the deadline nor are defensive guys.
Only players I was interested in watching were Boeser, Goldobin, and Rodin. Fuck Benning.
