Re: News from Around the NHL 2
Man, I know it's a thorny issue and this might be Captain Obvious, but watching the NHL continually fuck over teams and fans with the officiating is getting infuriating. Luck already plays an unbelievably large role in hockey games, both because of the nature of the game and because of how low-scoring it is now (back in the 80s I don't think it was as big a deal because you had so many more goals).
This past series, a freaking Stanley Cup Final, you could make a pretty strong argument that the refs swung both Games 1 and 6. Game 1 you had that offside review, where it's still not even clear if the play was offside and in any case, was separated from the goal by at least 10-15 seconds and then you had the ridiculous calls on the Preds players that led to PPG. That Game 6 call was sheer lunacy.
I think there's still a strong argument to be made that the Pens would have won the series (thought they were the better team last night), but it really gets my goat that officials played such an outsize role in determining the outcome.
Stuff like this is why I don't really trust the NHL to get anything right, including the World Cup of Hockey. This is a league that has the benefit of the best playoffs out of North American sports, but somehow manages to fuck it up consistently.

It's not limited to officiating, FlyHigh.

Oh god yeah, I mean, the playoff system is even worse. Amazing that people this incompetent have been allowed to hang on for this long.
They're also lucky to be flying below the radar because of the NFL, but the concussion policy and the way the league speaks about concussions both continue to be reprehensible.

Hmm interesting deal for TB/MTL, would have thought that TB could have gotten more for Drouin. I had the impression that Sergachev was a really solid prospect, but not necessarily a world-beater.

TB have no cap space for his new contract and got good D prospect which don't need to be protected, I think that was great job by Steve Y

MTL has no d depth. Weber and Markov? No thanks. I love Weber as a player, but his age not so much.

More just surprised there wasn't a bidding war (or if there was, that this was as high as it got). Drouin seems to be flashing a lot of elite skills and still just 22. Guess a lot of teams might not have had the flexibility with expansion plus the cap.

I suspect some teams have doubts about his temperament.

The Flames have actually traded for Mike Smith. Tell me, why was Brian Burke thought of as a good GM again?

Because he built a very good Vancouver team, and won a cup in Anaheim?

DGB had a pretty good recap recently of how he got the Sedins, pretty solid GMing there, think that like a number of guys (Lou, Clarke), he had a lot of trouble adjusting to the cap era.

I think his ego caught up with him, too. But it's tough to judge with Toronto, as that place skews a lot of decision making.

Chalk the fine-print under "fail". Again, the NHL does what's best for it in spite of the fans' interests.

Re: News from Around the NHL 2
That Deadspin article seems like rampant speculation. For all the shit Bettman has done, he seems pretty insistent that the Jerseys will not have ads on them.
Also, apparently all the new sweaters have been leaked now. Some of them I can't really understand where they would put ads to begin with, e.g. the Rangers.
The vegas jersey looks pretty bad. It reminds me of the old Thrashers sweaters because the top of the sleeves is a different color from the main body and the bottom of the sleeves. The colors are also not very appealing.
I do love the new Wild sweater though. I'm very glad that it's almost entirely green. The NHL needs more diversity in its team colors and the sweater looks really good on its own. Not happy that the Oilers are stepping on our turf but I guess I can't be too mad for the same reason. The rest seem mostly unchanged except cleaning up some unnecessary "apron-stitching" that the Reebok sweaters had, e.g. the Predators' sweater as illustrated in the Deadspin article. Some teams really profit from this, e.g. the Avalanche.

Rumors that Vegas wants our 2nd overall and that their 3 firsts might be on the table plus expansion players.
Would you guys give up on Nico/Nolan in a deal like 2nd overall + Macdonald for Mrazek + 6th overall? Pure speculation

The problem with our teams winning the lottery this year is there isn't that franchise altering player or two at the top. To get away from Macdonald if you're high on Mrazek makes deal like that very enticing.

Re: News from Around the NHL 2
Depends on the deal but I probably wouldn't tbh. By the time AMac is a real serious cap issue, I think they could buy him out with relatively minimal pain.
Guess neither is a superstar, but seems like most of the draftniks think that there's a real gap between Nico/Nolan and everybody else. For us, especially at Forward, I'm not convinced we need more top-9ish guys and I don't think we need depth-D either (someone like Vatanen/Brodin is fine, but how much are they moving the needle for us). They need a C that can eat minutes and hopefully lessen the load on Giroux as he gets older. Both of those guys seem to fit the bill pretty well.

No chance I trade this pick for quantity. Whoever we get is a 90% chance at being at least a borderline #1/2 center, and those are so hard to get.

Florida has done an exceptional job in their design whereas the Kings have taken a major step back with their black and silver; hopefully, with the Raiders in Vegas now, the Kings can return to the Lakers' scheme of purple and gold. But I agree with the Knights' jersey. It's fucking horrible, and the crest doesn't even make sense.

Seems like the Islanders gave way too much from them to take Berube. I guess they wanted to protect the entire team.

Re: News from Around the NHL 2
I thought about this and basically the conclusions is that Vegas took Grabovski in exchange for that no-name prospect. Then the Islanders had way more players they wanted to protect than they had slots. Besides the people they protected there is De Haan, Nelson, Clutterbuck and Bailey. Take the one you think is among them. Vegas now has that guy. Would you buy him back for a 1st, a 2nd and Berube?
I am not quite sure but I think its close. I still think they could have gotten it done for less.

Re: News from Around the NHL 2
No name prospect for Grabovski would not be enough to eat that contract.
They do have a lot of players exposed who they would want to keep, so I'm sure that's where some of the value was but I would say ~50% of the value was for Grabovski alone.
I am a bit surprised McPhee went right up to the cap, but I guess he will have 10+mil on LTIR. Will be interesting to see any side deals that happen now and what he does in free agency.

They also have more players than they can literally keep right now, so he is going to trade some of them for further assets and a number will be sent down via waivers.

Stuff's happening.
Coyotes add hockey players.
Rangers pick up a top-10 pick, and are threatening to move up (depending who you ask).
Blackhawks add a scoring threat... maybe... if P.Kane isn't magic.
And the Islanders commit to the rebuild by adding a former Oiler.

Hall of Fame class was announced. It consists of Teemu Selanne, Paul Kariya, Dave Andreychuk, Mark Recchi, Danielle Goyette, builders Clare Drake and Jeremy Jacobs. Happy for all the skaters and Kariya and Selanne making it at the same time will be fun to watch. But jesus christ, fuck Jeremy Jacobs. The guy belongs in hell, not the hall of fame.

Few giant contracts handed out this week. Big deal for Vlasic too.
Kuznetsov 7.8mil 8 years Holy shit. Seems a bit risky for the caps. They have 15 players and only 5 mil cap space l.

It's finally here, the nutcase offseason signing I was waiting for: Toronto gives Marleau a 3-year contract at 6.25 million per yer and a No-Movement-Clause. Marleau is a good player, but he turns 38 in September. That is a ton of money and a ton of risk, particularly since he will be on the books while they have to sign Marner, Matthews and Nylander to extensions.

The NHL's a lot like the lottery: you gotta give yourself the best odds to be successful.
The Marleau deal does not accomplish that.
