Oliver Wahlstrom before Jack Hughes (9/16 - 12/19/17)

26gp-16g-15a-31pts-120 SOG

Oliver Wahlstrom after Jack Hughes (12/20/17 - 3/30/18)

28gp-24g-28a-52pts-123 SOG

The point I'm making with Wahlstrom shows two things:

1. Wahlstrom was able to generate the same number of shots without Hughes
2. Jack Hughes creates better scoring chances for his linemates

As one of my Mentors, Ken Cook always told me "Kids have the right to keep getting better". Both are very good points Steve & there is a 3rd one as well. Oliver Wahlstrom continued to get better & is certainly trending in the right direction.

Very true. I was going to add that it's a good sign when a very good producer becomes an elite producer with a little help. Like Kurri, Leclair etc.

The anti-Brady Tkachuk narrative really is getting out of hand, especially after some are using point totals as part of their reasoning behind thinking he'll be a bust.

Do you know how rare it is for a freshman to lead his team in assists? Especially one with 10 NHL draft picks?
Former NCAA freshman and where they placed in team scoring.

K. Tkachuk 5th / 40 pts
B. Hull 5th / 60 pts
K. Stevens 10th / 20 pts
D. Weight 3rd / 69 pts
J. Leclair 4th / 34 pts
A. Oates 4th / 42 pts
C. Drury 10th / 27 pts
J. Toews 4th / 39 pts
R. Kesler 4th / 31 pts

The bottom line is that it's way harder to put up points as a freshman in college than it is in the CHL. Name me one scout, coach or analyst who thinks Tkachuk this year doesn't light up the CHL the same way Zadina and Svechnikov did.

That may be true.

But wahlstrom... even in the without hughes numbers... out produced tkachuks ntdp season.

Also quinn hughes produced better than tkachuk as a freshman.

I have tkachuk 9th on my list. Hes still a good player. A top 10 prospect. I just see a clear seperation of tiers between 8 ans 9... and wouldnt want the habs to take him with a top 7 pick.

Im not saying hes bad. Hes just not as good as wahlstrom, hughes, smith, boqvist, zadina, etc

I don't see trading down. I think they need an exceptional player, they have lots of good, but no great, specifically up front. I say make your list, maybe don't draft an rd, [maybe] but go for whoever you think can be a star. Then if you can fill a positional need later in the round, use the extra 2nd's to move up. He says, thinking he's realistic but watches at Not's place rather than working for a team.

Trading down would be a nice bookend to Bergevin's decade of how not to handle a top-ten pick. :danson:

2012 pick wrong kid
2016 trade kid
2018 fuck it

Not that trading a possible #7 would necessarily be a bad thing, I just like bookends. Especially good clean marble ones.
Also, let's keep this thread about Galchenyuk's on-ice performance, development and value and NOT bring in his personal life or race.

Looking at what they have done is a small part of how players are ranked. The most important part is projecting as a pro - no one on this board has a clue how to project.

That you have Tkachuk 9th on your list is a meaningful as AD praying on 24 year olds with Daddy issues. :trump:

If they draft 7th - picking Veleno would be fine by me (if Tkatchuk is off the board).

Guess you have to. It just makes things a bit awkward. If he could make it right off, someone ends up moving or out of position. If the kid takes 2-3 years fine, but you hope for better in the top 5.

Outside of Dahlin, not one of the other D are ready to really make the jump

There is some merit in saying that Juulsen, Brook, Fleury, Lernout on RD is deeper than Mete, Valiev, Tsyzka, Walford, Bourque at LD.

However, that said.... Boqvist and Dobson are better than all six players listed above. If RD is the best player available, I take the RD.

You can always trade someone later.... like Nashville did in getting centres for Jones and Girard, like Jersey did in getting Hall for Larsson, or Like Tampa did in moving forward prospects for McDonagh, etc...

Precisely why you take best D available, so when you're in the same position next year, you get your generational No. 1 C, and they both make the team the following season. If there isn't a 1C, on the board next year, you take another D, and wait until the following season.

2019 will be the Jack Hughes draft.

Wahlstrom reminds me of Laine (though not as good as Laine, but similar).

We get Dahlin this week-end, two days later we get Voynov and on July 1st we get Tavares. No way the league can compete with us after that.
