Re: The best forward group in Leafs history.
Our pp is going to be ridiculous. Ffs Babs, overload the pp1
Tavares and Mathews down low, Marner on the half boards, Mo up top, Marleau in the slot.
Fuck me.

MATTHEWS
JT
KADRI
Any gud pros out there that could sign a one year deal, to truly, once and for all have the deepest center depth in the league?
Who is the favourite as of now?

Re: The best forward group in Leafs history.
If you play the Kadri unit as a shutdown line the opposition can just play their top line more which will limit the minutes of JT and Matthews. The Leafs should just go strength on strength, no team can match their top end plus depth up front. No need to overthink it, the mismatches will happen regardless.

Re: The best forward group in Leafs history.
If anything, it would make more sense to play Tavares with Hyman and Brown since he will bring up the scoring of anyone he plays with.
But I still much prefer stapling Bill to AM, Mitch to JT, and Patty to Kadri. Shuffle the other wingers around and see who fits best where.

I don't think Tavares would be too pleased about going from Bailey and Lee to Hyman and Brown. One of the biggest criticisms of NYI was that they could never give him an elite winger.

True but I also don't see a scenario where JT playing without either of Nylander or Marner, or at the very least even a Kapanen or Johnsson helps the team win more games.

I'm telling you fellas. No fourth line C, just alternate double shifting Matthews and JT with the fourth line wingers (one of whom will be Johnsson, Brown, or Kapanen. So definitely not plugs).

He's defensively responsible and .41 PPG in his career and has scored 20 goals in a season.
I like Kapanen, but he has 10 points to his name (13 if you count the playoffs). That's good for .18 PPG
Hard to say what we have in Johnsson. But he'll be playing left wing anyway.

With Leivo or maybe Ennis on the 4th line, it would actually be a scoring line. I think it's a great idea. Doubt it will happen though

Brown did have a bit of a down year last year, but it was still decent. I'm betting it will be a much better year this year.
Those two still need to prove themselves. Right now, Brown is ahead of both.

The metrics don't support the notion that Brown is an effective defensive player. Every line he played on last season (save for the fourth line) did worst with him on it than without from a shots against, and expected goals stand-point, and he isn't an offensive driver. I prefer Kapanen and Johnsson because they are quicker players who also have strong defensive reputations and better underlying numbers. That said, if the biggest problem this team has is whether to play Brown on the third or fourth line they are obviously in great shape.
As for PPG, it is not fair to compare when one player has largely played in the top 9 with top line ice time, and the other has played exclusively in a 4th line role.

If he can find a niche on the pk, and win his fair share of faceoffs he can actually be a useful piece now that we have 3 dominant ES centers.

Please check out the plus minus for Bozak and Van Riemsdyk with Brown instead of Marner.

Marner-JT
Nylander-Matthews
Marleau-Kadri
Not sure why they’d go away from these pairings.
The wingers can rotate through.

Vermette one year deal for the 4th line center?
Babs would concur, to be sure.

Vermette sucks, and Babs was one of the main guys that sold Lindholm on Toronto because of how he could help the team now. The job is his to lose.

He is great at draws, but the rest of his game has dropped off considerably. I would rather let Goat and Lindholm fight it out for that spot, or if you really want to bring in a potential upgrade offer Nick Shore a cheap one year deal.

I'm still settling into the idea that with Tavares and Matthews in tow, we've guaranteed being pretty good for the next 5 years. Other than us, I think only the Pens can go into a season knowing they have two top-10 centers to work around. Fuck a duck.

And then you add in the fact that the Leafs 3C could be a 1C on some teams.

Nothing against Knads - you know I love him - but I'm glad we're no longer one of those teams.

The best part of this is, Knads will embrace the role. He loves JT, he wants to be him. Career year for Kadri.

The club has :
Brown
Ennis
Hyman
Jooris
Kadri
Kapanen
Leivo
Lindholm
Marleau
Marner
Matthews
Nylander
Tavares
That's 13. Who would you play him over? Ennis and Jooris? Leivo?

A Nash signing would indicate another trade I would think.
Is he done as hockey player?
A Nash on the 4th line is intriguing, if he can still play.
A pto perhaps.

Nash isn't coming out of half retirement to compete for a 3rd line job. Besides, I would rather leave open a spot for Leivo to take.

I have a feeling I’m going to be saying “I can’t believe we got this guy” a lot this season. But in a good way, not in a Rickard Wallin way.
