Mine is basically mounting Greg's head on the wall. We had a lengthy debate where I smashed him into pieces but unfortunately it was deleted due to Vonbonds fucking up the site or the "power outage"

I think it was more Craig hiding evidence. :trump:

Very badass. In a good and bad way. A little too badass for her age.

Budapest was great. Maybe our favority city from the whole trip. The Austrian Alps was cooler, but that’s not a city.

Budapest airport is another story. Even with online check-in done the day before, we had to wait in line for 1h40 for check-in/baggage drop-off Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt. Too few and inefficient staff. Plane left 45min late because of this. Siting in plane at Frankfurt airport now heading back to Mtl. Had to run like mad mens with only 30min to connect because of delay and had to pass passport control and typical German semi-autistic inflexibility at each step. Not a happy camper. Will write a sternly worded letter, I tell you!

Despite Lufthansa’s best efforts, we’ve made it home.

Hey, slique nique, how feasible/unfeasable is a family trip to Moscow and St-Petersburg? Safe? Easy enough to get around?

Now that we are back, it’s time to start thinking of next year. Now that my daughter has been to Japan and Germany, I think it might be time for her to further her education with Putin’s Russia. Hesitating based on safety/ease of transportation/people being unwelcoming of dirty American tourists.

I went to South Africa. One of my favourite trips. Just me and the wife, though. Not with a kid. I was also younger then (like 15 years ago). Now, just having people being generally rude is off putting. I’m old and pampered now, greg.

It’s either that or Australia or Portugal or the UK (London, Lake district and then to Scotland to drive around the highlands). My daughter is for some reason really into the UK. I haven’t been to the Portuguese mainland since 1998 and never been to the Porto region or the North. Australia I know little of. Been googling and my interest is really going up (Sydney, up to Cairns for snorkling in the Great Barrier Reef and then to the outback. Some great ocean drives and beaches along the coast as well). In terms of history, museums, monuments and experience of a culture, Russia seriously interests me. Would go without hesitation if on my own. Hesitating with wife and daughter. Wife isn’t keen on the idea. Thinks people will be always trying to scam us and whatnot and generally make it unpleasant.

Where in Poo-land are you, Mac? Enjoying? Film festival? Filming? Tell us MOAR!

Hungarian old mens could be quite rude/crazy as well. Younguns were generally very cool with good english and were quite friendly and laid back. Venture north of 55 or so and interactions become at your risk and peril, especially with old mens. Fuckers b kinda nutty. Germans were kinda what you expect (coldish but polite-ish). Came across a crazy train lady, but that was it. Service in Germany/Austria/Czech Rep was generally pretty disinterested and crappy. Surprised me. Work ethic and initiative/problem solving were severally lacking, at least I found from my little perusing around. Maybe that was only for people working in crappy service jobs, though.

Tells me more about Poo-land!

Moscow and Leningrad are as safe/unsafe as any other major city you've been in. Moscow is the largest city in Europe so there are huge city dynamics, but nothing overly different from New York or Paris. They now have Yandex taxi (Russian Uber) so you don't get scammed like before.. that's a big plus. Other than that, seriously, I wouldn't see any security concerns except for Hungarian gypsies trying to pick your pockets. I mean, if you're going to party then that's a whole different thing, might come across very drunk people or northern Caucasus representatives with bad intentions, but visiting as a young family, I don't see how you'd get into trouble. I'd be much more worried about the Muscovite mosquitoes, savage beasts I swear.

There's a highspeed train doing Moscow-Peter now, and local flights are really cheap. Moscow's subway is extremely efficient and it's probably the best way to get around quickly, super cheap too.. the central stations are pretty neat too. Directions and announcements are done in both Russian and English. People are kinda cold but if you actually get to know them, they're really welcoming (sometimes too much)... they are usually very keen to engage with foreigners, Canadians are loved everywhere and Russia is not different. Maybe don't shout "Slava Ukraïné", other than that no problemo. I think it's pretty easy to get around in English, French is also somewhat popular in the older intellectual circles..

I would suggest to add a quick visit to the Baltics if you're in St-Pete's.. The family went to Riga and Tallinn a couple of years ago and absolutely loved both, specially Tallinn.

I was speaking with a friend earlier today about traveling and he told me it's quite difficult to get travel Visas nowadays... he wanted to go to Moscow during the World Cup but apparently you had to have bought tickets to the games to get a Visa.. I don't know if it was because of the World Cup or because political relations are pretty bad right now. But you should definitely check that before making plans.

In the end, both cities are pretty modern, quite rich and well run... if you go in the countryside, it's another story.

Do you think Putin would videotape our hotel room? My wife has been known to order hookers into our foreign hotel rooms.

Florence was close. I'll call it a tie.

Asked my wife if she had ever spoken in English exclusively anywhere in Quebec outside of Montreal when she got really off-put by some Hungarian old mens.

The worst is when you speak French with an English accent.

Rudest place I've been to is probably the emergency room in Maisonneuve-Rosemont. Man, some of those triage receptionists are mad at life.

I'm a wee lad to your 64 years (or whatever), and rudeness puts me off as well.

The fucking Poles, man...

Almost fucking knifed a couple...

Looks to me like that's a widespread behaviour in Eastern Europe.

I wans in Poland on family matters and it turned out to be part business in the end.

As I am thinking about business, you should be glad to learn we have now found 90% of the financing for your movie, Dogo, which will begin shooting in late february.

There isn't much to tell about Pooland.

They're a very unwelcoming people as far as tourism go, stone-faced pieces of curmudgeony shit. We were "lucky" to be travelling along with a polish-speaking woman of ostensible polish origins and they were even worse with her. The zloty is a joke currency so you kinda get to live like Kings and Princes, so that's fun; vodka glasses for 0,25$ a pop are a doozy and make you forget their boorish demeanor.

I won't claim to have gotten the full and true poolish experience (I was not exactly sleeping on a cot at your run of the mill Wojcik's or Kowalski's), but I did get a sense of a rather tenebrous, vengeful, fascism-inclined people with nary a love for any kind or type of strangers (and mos def NO brown people (they do tolerate their ajunz, as I came across quite a few japs and chinks makin' a living in the "service" business (no, I don't mean masseuses or whores)).

Beautiful place, great veggies and fruits, fucking borscht and sausages and fucking pierogis and potatoes all around, no real love for wine (that's a bummer), tend to get drunk quite early in the day and love dancing in the street, and, uh...

Well, fucking loved it, actually.

Am planning a second visit in the near future.

Gotta get me some back country because we spent most of our trip in Warsaw.

So yeah.

5,75/10 overall.

I thought it was pretty obvious from his post that it involved romantic entanglement, Dog.

So Nick, Mac confirms my suspicion that Eastern Europeans (at least older ones) are boorish racist cunts that make it generally unpleasant for foreigners. I suspect the further east you go the worse it gets (former west germany had a different feel than former GDR which was similar to Czech Rep. Hungary is were rudeness started getting more open (rather than just subdued coldness/indifference). Mac seems to have experienced worse in the Poo-land. How does this bode for Russia? Maybe you don’t experience it because you are Ruskie (sorta like francophones think Quebec is so welcoming and Ontarianians keep getting told off by racist fucks)?

This is important. Not because I would personally mind too much (think Moscow/St-Pete is worth the hassle), but VERY importantly because the wife will be all like “I told you so...these people don’t like foreigners...this is not fun” and so on and so forth.
