I'm not sold on Beto. I like the charisma and he seems like a decent guy, but I really want the Americans to vote in someone who is actually progressive, rather than another sorta phoney-progressive person like Obama was. They might have that rarest of chances without the GOP in power at all to actually fix some of the horrible shit going on down there.

Obama wasn't that bad, I guess. He did sorta, kinda, fix their healthcare a little.

The thing about Warren/Harris is I'm not so sure they win the general. Beto doesn't excite me personally, but I like his chances against Trump.

Someone tell me what to think about Booker, Klobuchar, Gillibrand and Castro.

My take is Booker is in bed with Wall Street, Gillibrand lacks ideals and has a political history all over the map, Klobuchar is pretty much just really bitchy, and Castro is....Cuban?

Booker has put himself out as a man of the people when he became mayor of Newark. He's like the anti-Chris Christie. He's more of an urban development guy who parlayed his success as Newark's mayor to become a federal politician. I'm not sure what he brings, but he's more of a progressive than a fiscal guy. But not as far left as Sanders / AOC.

Castro was the Transport or Housing Minister or some other boring portfolio. He's better than Beto in that he was actually successful in his political bid in Texas. The only other thing I know about him is that he has a twin brother (also a politician) who appeared with him on Colbert to announce that he was maybe thinking about running for President.

Even though Biden is 70, I would rather have him as a bridge for the next wave of Democrats than four more of Trump. I don't care about his age. He has the experience and likability to win over Republicans fed up with Trump. Booker might win his own state in a primary. That's about it.

Biden? Likeability? Come on guys.

The democrats need to be able to have the confidence that anyone they run can beat Trump. Like seriously. They can't choose their candidate based on that.

Among the headliners, the least likely to beat Trump is Warren. But I think the other 4 are fair bets to beat him and draw on different demographics to do so.

Biden is well respected within his own party and has that grandpa likeableness going for him. A lot of Republicans I know respect Biden and would vote for him over Trump. Harris has too many skeletons in her closet in my opinion even though I personally like her and Warren.

Not to be sexist, but I would put a male pitbull up against Trump, with a female VP on the card. Someone has to go blow for blow with Trump and not look weak.

You think Warren has a worse shot than Harris? How come?

I wonder how much overlap there is in the voter base that is too too sexist to vote for a woman, to racist to vote for a black person, and too Republican to vote for a Democrat. Obama proved that a Black person can overcome racism if they're hella charismatic, but we don't have any proof that a woman can win the general yet. How much better/worse is being both?

Beto O'Rourke is running for president. Like Obama, he has sought the middle ground on policy – while his Democratic rivals veer to the left
Despite O'Rourke's status as the darling of grassroots liberal activists and college kids, his positions look a lot like Barack Obama's, which would put him to the right of much of the Democratic 2020 field.

Plenty of prominent voices on the left regard O'Rourke's moderate voting record and his reluctance to vilify Wall Street as fatal flaws.

"I'm a capitalist. I don't see how we're able to meet any of the fundamental challenges that we have as a country without, in part, harnessing the power of the market," O'Rourke recently told reporters.

Biden is senile. My fear is the dems go WAY left in order to try to counter Trump when what they need is someone moderate who can pick off the less batshit repubs. Of course that's where Howard Schultz is probably going to run so we're fucked no matter what

He's getting a ton of press coverage which is good. He seems flexible in his ideas and who he would work with. I like him. You don't wanna go too far left, and alienate a chunk of the voters he'll need.

Now here's a Dem my friend Chrimea can get behind: 88-year-old former Senator whose campaign is run by anti-establishment teens.

Back in 2008, Gravel had set up a Twitter account, but never used it. Late on Tuesday night, he handed it over to the teenagers, figuring that they knew more about social media than he did. They subsequently went on a rampage, declaring that Henry Kissinger should be sent to the International War Crimes Tribunal at The Hague and spend the rest of his life in prison, mocking Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) for allegedly inventing a fake drug-dealer friend and accusing former vice president Joe Biden of having “blood on his hands” from his vote in favor of the Iraq War.

Some gems from his account:

Here is the thing. Obama's personal politics are pretty progressive. The system, however, is not. So, if you are going to be progressive, what are you going to get done? Even if they end the filibuster, there aren't going to be 50 votes in the Senate for some of these policies. Shit, getting to 50+1 in the Senate is going to be tough (losing in FL was a really big deal).

Obama was a real mixed bag. His social policies were fairly progressive, but he fell short for me in a lot of ways, many of which he didn't need Senate votes for. Government transparency, domestic surveillance and drone strikes all come to mind. He also didn't do much of anything to take on corporate America or income inequality.

I'll admit I'm conflating a lot of terms here under the label progressive. I don't think progressivism or conservatism necessarily take a stance on murdering a bunch of people in rural Pakistan. But still, I think there's plenty of room to do more than Obama did.

So, there's a big difference between progressivism as a domestic ideology and progressivism in foreign policy. As for the latter, there's a reason why presidents of both parties moved towards the "blob" foreign policy position regardless of party. It's easy to be an idealist when you don't have your hands on the controls. Even Trump has struggled with this, and he literally doesn't give a shit about the repercussions.

For example, there is a reason folks were hesitant to draw down in Iraq ... ISIS was the result of the US backing down. Of course, fears of something like ISIS happening is the very reason Bush I didn't topple Saddam in the Persian Gulf War.

WASHINGTON
President Donald Trump’s tweet on Thursday recognizing the Golan Heights as Israeli territory surprised members of his own Middle East peace team, the State Department, and Israeli officials.

U.S. diplomats and White House aides had believed the Golan Heights issue would be front and center at next week’s meetings between Trump and Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. But they were unprepared for any presidential announcement this week.

No formal U.S. process or executive committees were initiated to review the policy before Trump’s decision, and the diplomats responsible for implementing the policy were left in the dark.

Even the Israelis, who have advocated for this move for years, were stunned at the timing of Trump’s message.

“We all found out by tweet,” one Israeli official said. “We’ve been lobbying for this for a long time, but it was not the product of one phone call. There were hints, but we weren’t given advance notice
