Still felt a sense of loss after everything went down, which is the only thing that mattered for me. But yeah, now that the NK threat is done, I expect the whole thing to go downhill from here.

The writing on this show was so immaculate for most of it's existence, that they actually could surf on that wave for two fast paced/fan fiction type of seasons.

Makes about as much sense as a being that has lived for thousands of years, commanding an army that does not require food or rest not to engage in siege warfare until the humans simply die or desperately attempt to flee. Hell, the Night King obviously has some measure of command over the elements so let the weather kill the humans off for you. What was the rush?

As usual, great actors here - John Gielgud, Helen Mirren, Malcolm McDowell - but the orgy scenes were poorly lit and blurry.

This season seems a bit rushed. I barely blinked at the start of this episode and they already killed the bald guy without much build up.

I miss the pacing of the first few seasons where most of the episodes were long roundtable discussions mixed in with the occasional orgy.

Season 6-7-8 have been like that, coinciding with the end of GRRM's material, the current writers had too much of a burden to carry an ending that wasn't even finished by the author.

I think Dany becoming a tyrant was foreseeable and will happen in the books, but the way it was executed in the show was laughable. Then the dumbing down of characters like Littlefinger, Tyrion, even Jon...who as naive as he could be, was not the mess we're seeing right now. Even the cast seems to be on hiatus, very silent about commenting the current season, quite reserved about their excitement of the finale.

Show should have lasted one more season after this one in order to get the pacing right. This season should've been all about the NK, his backstory and then setting up what's going on right now. But it was too hard of a task for the writers to come up with original ideas, and not really their responsibility to deliver the ending to the saga.

It's just a shame for the fans 'cause it could've certainly been better, and it should've been better.

HBO wanted 10 episodes each for season 7 and season 8, but the show runners decided to only do 7 and 6 instead. That was a pretty big fuck up in hindsight. Those lost 7 episodes could have fixed a lot of the problems with the last two seasons.

I wonder if Disney is getting cold feet about giving those guys their own Star Wars trilogy.

They gave up. Maybe they got tired of it, or maybe they realized they could never develop something that could hold up to the first 4-5 seasons. GOT pretty much saved their careers, and might actually destroy it in the end.

Either way, it's just a shame.

I don't think they gave up. I think they fucked up decisions years ago, strayed too far from the books, and found themselves written into a corner. They ignored story lines from the books, like zombie Catelyn and Young Griff, which were probably essential for the GRRM ending. They overdeveloped Cersei into a villain and Dany into a hero, so their endings don't make any sense. And I assume the book version of the Long Night has a lot more magical shit going on than zombies and dragons, so the show runners just opted to ignore it in favour of the gritty realism of Assassin Creed Arya.

What lacked essentially was time for proper resolution, strengthening character motives. I don't think the problem was straying from the books or a lack of storylines, they already had more than they could handle on the show. It just seems like lazy writing/giving up on creative ambition, more than a lack of existing material from the book. I don't necessarily put all the blame on the showrunners, because I know how tough it is to carry something that is not fully yours and taking it to the promised land. It hinders the creative process to a certain extent.

The long night didn't need more magic, just more focus on the Night King and more implication with characters who actually lost something directly to him (Jon/Dany).
As bad-ass as Arya is, she had nothing to do with the Night King.

Cersei and Dany were never too much of a villain/hero on the show in my perspective. I thought Cersei's end was the only logical thing, specially her still being in denial while seeing KL being burned to ashes. She never progressed from being a stubborn teenage girl who wanted it all and couldn't accept loss. That was her tragedy.

The problem with Dany is she started killing innocents and children because Cersei/Euron killed her dragon and bestie + coming to terms with the fact that she'd never be the acclaimed leader that Jon is...in a very short period of time.

Embracing her impulses rather than losing to her "Freedom warrior" act to achieve her goals. Finally embracing that it's all about power for her. In a couple of episodes.

In of itself, it's a great storyline, but it needed more time to simmer.

They've been making it clear she loves to burn people for ages, we had just cheered until this time

My only complaint is I wish they did more episodes... I'd imagine doing something for that long that big would be exhausting though and I'd want to wall away at a point too

I also read the leaked spoilers months ago, and they turned out to be 98.5% true, I know how it all ends. So that contributes to my disillusionment.

I was okay with her burning tyrants, up until she burned Sam's dad and bro. I never really thought of her as a hero nor a villain, but that's the moment I was like "Damn, this bitch needs to chill".
