Except Batherson can skate.

It seems like so long ago that Stone was out there a step behind every player as one of the roughest skaters you’ll ever see in a WJC. But boy could he score. So smart. I will admit I would have traded him shortly after that tournament because I thought he was over hyped and would never be able to skate in the new faster NHL.

He’s come so far and worked so hard in his skating. You can always tech things like skating, but you can’t teach the pure mind that mark Stone has for the game.

Back to Batherson. He looks good. Actually hard to tell him and Formentin apart, which is a good thing. Both lanky but with great wheels. Batherson has a really nice long reach and gets the shot off quick. He emits a smart, calm personality just watching him, which I like. Seems like a easy one to teach and coach.

The lone bright spot this year has been these two picks from last year. Both quite noticeable. Has there ever been two OTT players on Canada? When was a Cowen there, with Stone? I don’t remember many. I remember Spezza sucked his big year at the WJC, which I guess was foreshadowing on him in big games and championships in his career.

I remember Jeff Glass backstopping Canada to gold on such a good team that I could have kept it under 10 each game. Nice to see him finally in the nhl so many years later.

Building a cottage closish to Belleville, so I went to a Friday night game the other week. The Yardmen is a pretty decent arena post-reno, except for the terrible beer selection. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience to spend $45 and get parking, great seats and 2 beers. And to top it off, I hit up the new Shorelines Casino and won $130 on the slots. Belleville will be on the NY Times Places To Visit next year. Book it.

The game sucked though. The BSens looked throughly out-coached by whoever coaches the Wilkes-Barré Syndrome Penguins. Some thoughts:

Nick Paul had a big rush once. If he was 19, I would call it a flash of his potential.

Filip Chlapik oozes skill out of all orfices, but needs to assert himself more. He looks like someone that could thrive right now in the NHL with good linemates.

Colin White scored 2. He's got a bit of a shot, which is good to see.

Ben Harpur was good. Lots of confidence with the puck. I still think he projects to become an NHL D-man, even if it's bottom pairing.

Jaros was good too.

Hogberg got pulled.

JOB was flying all night. He is rising from the ashes and will be centering the 2nd line of your Stanley Cup winning Ottawa Senators in 2019.

Chris Kelly LOL. I was 2 beers in and started feeling warm and nostalgic. They announced him as an Olympian and we gave him a standing O. Unfortunately I don't know if he could still score a goal in the Special Olympics.

Hey Murph. Will do. But I'm a Baby Sens fan now, not an Adult Sens fan. Expect shitty prospect updates and old man rants about Ottawa not stocking the farm. Also pics of me and GM / Spin Class Instructor Randy Lee doing meth in his truck.

Random thought.

I was checking out Batherson's progress this year and noticed his team has two 20-year-olds having great seasons.

http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdis ... ncode=TRUE
Alex Barre-Boulet has 99 pts. in 52 games. Had a PTO with Vegas last September.

http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdis ... ncode=TRUE
Alexandre Alain has 72 pts. in 52 games. Had a PTO with Tampa in September 2016.

Anyone following the Q closely? Should these guys be targets to be signed as UFAs?

The Lightning already signed Barre-Boulet, because of course they did. Alain is unsigned, obviously also on Tampa's radar, but is not a late bloomer like Batherson. In fact Alain was a high pick coming into the Q, and has just been slow and steady to develop. I'm surprised he hasn't signed though, considering he has good size, can skate and no red flags.

Also from Batherson's club, will be interesting to see if Joel Teasdale goes in this year's draft. It was a surprise he went undrafted last season (Button had him 11th to open the season), and he's only improved.

Interesting Forward Prospect?

Post #514 by RTWAP » Mon Apr 23, 2018 9:27 pm

Brad Morrison was drafted by the Rangers 3 years ago but never signed. He bumped along in the WHL for the next two season without getting even close to a point a game. He was traded last summer, and ... got less than a point a game with his new team.

He was traded at the deadline to a new team and got 40 points in 32 games. That's a bit of an improvement. Well done.

He has played 12 games in the playoffs so far. 30 points. Holy shit!

Talk about a late bloomer. Oh yah, and he has Ass Burgers.

In other words, the centerpiece of the Spezza trade is on waivers. But I am sure Josh Norris will be different because the Senators are a team.

Sieloff also on waivers. We acquired him for Chiasson, the other major piece in the Spezza trade.

(Chiasson, inexplicably, is now a Stanley Cup champion).

Since the trade:

For Dallas:
Spezza: 73 G, 201 PTS

For Ottawa:
Chiasson: 19 G, 40 PTS
Paul: 3 G, 6 PTS
Sieloff: 0 G, 1 PT, 1 teammate concussed

Gotta love how the team tagline inherently frames Karlsson as outside of that... as if.we should believe that is on him.

I do not get why they think blatant political marketing styles will be effective for them. If anyone should be immune, it is the Ottawa market.

After an apparently controversial draft, I'm curious to see how the new influx of prospects look. The future in the defensive end does look good, especially if built around Chabot and what Brannstrom is hoped to be.

I forgot that Colin White was picked in the same draft as Ceci, if nothing else it sounds like there is a longer list of guys piling up at the high AHL/low not level...

with the quantity of assets, I guess they're hoping to hit a couple lottery tickets?

With the draft and UFA day gone, the rebuild is in full swing. Selected players aside, still a lot of new assets to come from potentially good slots.

Some conditional picks, I think this is accurate

2020 Draft - 1st 6 picks
1st rd, Ott, CBJ
2nd - ott, CBJ, Dallas
3rd Ott

2021 draft:- 1st 6 picks
1st - ott, cbj, sjs
2nd - ott, cbj, sjs

I'd expect a few more mid range picks added in, they can certainly add this way...

Those picks have decent odds to play with the current folks who are under 23

Forwards -
Tkachuk
White

Norris
Brown
Backers
Batherson
Formenton
Chlapik
Pinto and other folks

D
Chabot
Jaros

Brannstrom
Bernard-Docker
Thomson
Tychonick

G

Sogard
D'accord
Gustavsson
Hogberg
Mandolese

Just looking at that, looks like more depth on the defensive side. Of course this is somewhat arbitrary and there is no guarantee any 1 player will be good

The nice thing is that there is a large amount of young talent coming, and more on the way. Provided an AHO style offer doesnt bankrupt the team, there is a strong base being built

I think for a call up, hed do fine, though, Erik Karlsson is my ace of spades, and Bingo is getting revamped this year, with Mattias Karlsson, Peter Regin whom, supposedly is better than Fabian Brunnstrom, according to various SEL fans they have similar numbers, so it wouldnt be stretch comparing the two.

Second, are they airing the match between the Ottawa Senators and Frolunda Indians in Canada? Im totally excited for the game, my friends in Sweden say it will air on Canal , any thoughts?

So for the first time in forever, I check in on AHL game scores. Belleville has been intriguing. They started slow and are now humming, winning often on a long two week road trip. First place in the division. They were last in the fall.

25-13 overall which is impressive. Their home and away record is bonkers. A first place team that's one game under .500 at home, at 9-10. They have a nuts road record at 16-3 which looks like a typo. It will be interesting to see how the year plays out. They're now getting goaltending as Gustavsson has improved a bit and Daccord has really come in to push.

They are young, as I think Dorion said they're the second or third youngest team in the league. The AHL is weird as there's some good teams with older bad NHLer's. Not the case in Belleville.

Josh Norris sort of sums up the season in Belleville. I've been watching his stat lines. It reads like a smart player for sure. If you click on his game log you'll see a player who had no points and was -5 in the first five games. A young center playing big minutes and the first pro minutes of his life. By game 6 it really looked like Norris started to get comfortable to the game and speed and size. In the next 37 games he only goes pointless 7 times. He's been incredibly consistent which I think is the most impressive thing to me. Once considered a huge question mark and worry in the Karlsson trade now looks like at least a guy who's a lock to play in the NHL. I haven't watched him much nor should I be in a position to rate NHL players, but with his growth curve this year, he could keep climbing up and up. Will be interesting to see when he gets a few gift games this year in Ottawa.

Belleville looks good. They should be tough to beat in a playoff series if they get the goatending.

Big game tonight on the road against the Milwaukee who is 15-3 and home. Look at me, I follow AHL hockey.
