Rebuilding my PC

Post #1 by HS » Thu Aug 18, 2016 4:42 pm

Decided to rebuild it.

I just got the GTX 1080 through a friend for $100, so I'm earmarking the rest of my budget to upgrade my hardware to 2016 specs. I'm also selling my GTX 980 to add to my budget -- which is currently $2,500. I want to get a new CPU (Six-Core), Motherboard, RAM, Power Supply, Ultrawide monitor (I have two 144 Hz Acer monitors), a larger case, and I may have to buy another license for Windows 10.

I'm planning on going with these specs. Thoughts?

You might want to splurge on a better monitor. You aren't going to get the most out of a GTX1080 with a 1080p monitor, even if it is ultrawide (unless you are going to use the new monitor with your current two monitors).

Also, if you aren't using your computer for editing software or data crunching, 32gb RAM is overkill but RAM is relatively cheap and there is not much harm in buying too much of it if you really want to future proof it.

That's a good point. I thought about 16 GB, but I agree that I don't need 32 GB, so I'll just switch back. 1080p monitors are perfect for me to be honest. If I go to 1440p, I may not be able to scale at some points. There are a few games that don't scale to 1440p, so I don't see the point at the moment. I do want to reduce my monitor count to one so I can have free space on my desk.
