It's not a location thing

it's a time/multiple flight thing

It's be easier to go to Iceland and then Lisbon

Pena castle in Sintra is a very cool daytrip if you're in the Lisbon area. If you want to have some beach time around Lisbon, Praia do Troia (Setubal) about 1.5h from Lisbon is great, much closer you have Cascais and Estoril (about 45 minutes on the train from downtown Lisbon) is a must I think.

Also, I would end the trip in Porto.. there are a lot flights from Porto to YUL. It's really a nice small city, very laid back.. no stress, enjoy a good meal on the Douro with a great local wine.

Yes Sintra is good. Go early, by train, catch the first bus and go right to the castle, then walk down to the old Moorish castle. Only do the palace if you got time to kill.

We did it in reverse and the castle was absolutely mobbed with people by the time we got there.

We did the walk from the Moorish castle down to the town/palace. Totally doable, but the trail markers weren't the best.

I guess it depends on how much of a connoisseur of port wine you wannabe. If you just want to see the sights, visit one or two of the main port houses, then you need 2 days minimum. Porto is not that big of city, but if you tack on days sampling port wine or doing a Douro valley tour you can easily stretch it out.

Lisbon, while still pretty much walkable, is more spread out, has more sites, more areas to explore, more shopping, and a more metro feel than Porto. Then you have a day to Sintra which is worth it.

My feeling was while I like the Porto vibe more, I would still spend more time in Lisboa on a first visit. If you got 7 days, I'd go 3 in Porto, 3 in Lisbon, 1 in Sintra.

it's actually 3-5 days in Sao Miguel and then trying to figure out the rest

going for a total of 14 days, but trying to leave some flexibility, right now I am working on the minimums to spend in each place I guess.

so like

4 days Sao Miguel
4 days Porto
4 days Lisbon

leave me a couple of travel days as well.

Is there a part of town better to stay at than others? Getting in late if it makes a difference. Other option is Barcelona but haven’t been to Portugal yet and is the only western europe country I haven’t visited yet so pushing for Lisbon.

We stayed between castle st George and main square, which we really like for its local feel. If you're looking for a party, I think the area on the other side of the main square is where the nightlife is.

We stayed near Rossio and didn't venture up that way, the internet says that is a rougher area. The Alfama or Bairro Alto areas are the places to stay. The Alfama is definitely hilly.

Okey dokey, going to the real Portugal with the fam in some 3 weeks and need to finish bookings. 2 weeks, wanna take it chill. Went to Lisbon before, but that was like 20 years ago. Doing Lisbon and North. Will do 7 odd days in Lisbon (including day trips to sintra, beach, etc.). Then renting a car to go up. Flight back from Porto. Will stop in Batalha and Coimbra (1 day). Have 2 days pegged for Douro Valley and another 3 or so in Porto.

Looking for some recommendations on cool spots to also hit in the north. Anybody stay in “Poussadas”? They are the porto equivalent of the Spanish Paradores -state owned hotels in historical/nature sites (like old castles or monasteries or somewhat in the middle of nowhere with gorgeous nature views). Did that in Northern Spain and that was the highlight. So thinking of doing it here. One in the Douro Valley for couple nights. There is a nice one all the way up in Viana do Castelo. Thinking of maybe doing few nights up there. Anybody ever been in that area? Any other northern portugal cool spots you guys know of?
