At least it worked out for the Oilers.

Eh, it's pretty understated what a big difference he makes to a team.

I barely remember anything about that season other than our winning streak at the end of the year and the awful Carolina series. How the fuck did Edmonton make the finals?

I love me some Mirco. No one is going to convince me otherwise that he's a top four defenseman. Use him more. Be smart!

even if we don't get Carlson, if we can somehow trade for a top 4 LHD, I think we are in OK shape

just need a body that can absorb some of the minutes that Greene has to face

Would not mind Butcher-Vatanen but that would really only be possible if we somehow can assemble another top four pairing so those two aren’t overwhelmed

ideally he's in a role like white / greene / rafalski / daneyko playing in a top 4 with two the two scotts.

They never once put him with Sami, which is where he'd have been ideally placed to strike at the heart of offenses.

Mueller-Vatanen
Butcher-Carlson
Greene-Severson

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that defense.

Yep, I think MM could handle a top four role with the right partner

If Washington makes a big effort to retain Carlson I’d call about Orlov

I'd rather Orlov over Carlson tbh. This year when I started NHL 18, first thing I did was move Henrique for Orlov.

agreed. i honestly think it works either way in the top 4. Greene down with Severson (or ideally Santini or gone) would make a solid bottom pairing.

greene and santini started out well together last season. santini was a little overwhelmed going up against top lines, but i don't think it was as bad as the advanced stats people declare. and that would go away on a third pairing anyway.

Exactly, they'd probably match really well as a third pair D.

PP:

Vatanen
Butcher

PK:

Mueller
Vatanen
Carlson
Greene

If Santini draws in over Severson, then, Santini gets added to the PK group and him and Greene can rotate maybe.

Santini can't be sent down without waiver next year so I'd pencil him in somewhere, if not 7D. Though knowing Hynes, he may just waive him anyways.

they'll play him as the 1C for a few weeks and then waive him when he doesn't play well

shero's to do list this summer:
- sign a top line centre to take the pressure of nico (ideally tavares or stastny)
- sign a top pairing d-man to take the pressure off all the d-men
- jettison lovejoy into the sun
- re-sign wood, noesen, coleman, gibbons
- extend johansson if he wants to stay
- extend zacha, butcher and mueller if they are in the plans
- drafts some kids who'll make a dent in 2-4 years

it's really not that bad

Stastny isn’t a top line center.

He still played with him for most of the season, if I’m not mistaken. Martinez played a lot of RD for them with a lot of crap on the left behind Muzzin. That includes Phaneuf.

quick twitter search suggests they played together quite a bit, if not most of the time

Anyway, he’s 29. Aim younger than that

Hischier-Stastny-Zajac-Coleman (but it’ll be Boyle at least for one more year) down the middle is pretty good.

I think Stastny will not necessarily price but definitely term us out. 2-3 years is all I’d want him for but someone stupid will beat that

Stastny signed a 4 year deal when he was 28, so you never know. 3 years might not be out of the question, especially with the whole connection with his dad and stuff

there really aren't many free agents I have any interest in. Tavares, Carlson, Stastny, JVR, deHaan

that might be pretty much it

Gibbons didn't play yesterday after getting injured against Finland. Looked like hand/wrist sliding head first into the end boards.
