Not that I want Karlsson traded, but it's curious to me we aren't hearing rumours similar to the Yashin deal.

I know I'm comparing apples to whatever the Russian version of an apple is.... The yam maybe? But Yashin was at the time, a star player moving out of town. Ignoring what Chara became, Ottawa did get a top 2 pick. Can't do it with montreal, but... Svechnikokv and a haul of picks and defensive prospects would at least make it sting a little less.

From Friedman's 31 Thoughts:

10. The Golden Knights came close to acquiring Erik Karlsson at the deadline. After seeing how the Capitals locked down the neutral zone and point men in the final, you can see how they might revisit something like this.

Word is one of the biggest hang-ups at the end was Cody Glass, drafted sixth overall last June. Vegas didn’t want to include him.

The Knights have just one pick in the top three rounds (a second), and since they’re still creating a prospect pool, a Karlsson deal could be very tricky. It’s why they’re being linked to John Carlson, because he only costs you money.

11. For those of you praying for the chaos and carnage of offer sheets, here are this year’s thresholds, along with the draft picks that must be surrendered as compensation if the original team doesn’t match.

Remember: you must use your own original picks, not those acquired from somewhere else.

Offer Sheet (AAV)
Compensation

$1,339,575 or below
None

Over $1,339,575 to $2,029,59
3rd

Over $2,029,59 to $4,059,322
2nd

Over $4,059,322 to $6,088,980
1st, 3rd

Over $6,088,980 to $8,118,641
1st, 2nd, 3rd

Over $8,118,641 to $10,148,302
(2) 1st, 2nd, 3rd

Over $10,148,302
(4) 1st

Personally, I believe we are getting closer to the day it happens, but my prime pick for 2018, Mark Stone, seems less likely because Ottawa has a ton of cap room. The league average salary for 2017-18 was $3,115,115 — up 3.4 per cent from last season. And, NHL teams have the option to walk away from a salary arbitration award at $4,222,941 or more.

So.... Cody Glass+Theodore+Tuch for Karlsson and Ryan was it? Maybe a first thrown in?

After last season, I don't think Vegas will be willing to eat Ryan's salary when they could use that cap space to sign a UFA or otherwise add another piece to attempt another run.

In lighter news:

Also, for those who missed it: Melnyk was the one who found Lee a lawyer.

So don't expect Lee to be going anywhere.

And another new low for the franchise:

The Karlssons have gotten a peace bond against Mike Hoffman's girlfriend, Monika Caryk, for numerous threats and harassment, including about their undead son.

This has been a staggering 8 months for the Senators. There are so many insane saga's and distractions and the off season and it hasn't even started.

http://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/mike-hoffmans-longtime-girlfriend-allegedly-behind-campaign-of-harassment-against-melinda-and-erik-karlsson

Melinda Karlsson has filed an order of protection against the longtime girlfriend of Senators forward Mike Hoffman — alleging a campaign of harassment that plagued the Karlssons after the death of their son and through much of the last NHL season, this newspaper has learned.

In hindsight, hiring a PR guy to be the new Chief Operating Officer should have been a red flag about how the Senators expected the offseason to go.

He's in pretty deep now. It's cut your assets in half and move on, but she's clearly mentally unstable so I do kind of feel for the guy. Not sure if a clean split can be done with someone like that.

Better to just turn your 5 million a year into 1.25 million take home and move on with your life. He pretty much has to in order to get another job in the league.

The only comparable I can come up with is the steve Downie attacking Akim Aliu over a naked washroom hazing incident on a bus that the coach knew about that resulted in Bobby Orr telling his clients not to go to Windsor (because I’m sure that was always their dream...) the owner had to sell. That was OHL.

I can’t imagine the work culture there.
- Randy Lee charged with harassment, going to miss “some of” the draft while he’s in court.
- team has known about harassment against family of most valuable piece of franchise - holds out for better offers.

So do we want to baselessly speculate what Duthie is referring to?

Options could include:
- human trafficking
- hazing
- the team is actually a front to funnel money to Ukrainian nationalists.
- counterfeit jeans ring
- team book club fell apart once Chris Neil left
- old fashioned fisticuffs
-

My baseless guesses are: the team failing to make off-ice personnel payroll, Lee's behaviour in Buffalo being the tip of the iceberg, and Melnyk being connected to Paul Manofort.
