Other than Beto, they're all so old. Am I the only one who doesn't want a senile president?

Booker and Harris aren't too old, and are in the mix. Sherrod Brown would be 68, which is not unreasonably old. I mean, this is a senior (end of career) position in government to a large extent, it shouldn't be unexpected that they have some mileage on them in most cases. Obama (and potentially Beto) are really on the young side of things for this type of position.

If Biden runs I think it would be imperative that he commit to a one-term presidency given his age (same for Sanders).

It will be interesting to see how Harris' career as a prosecutor plays in the primary (assuming she runs).

Lies!

She’d sweep the working class rust belt voters back but would leave wealthy suburbanites up in the air.

I think just taking back the rust belt is likely enough.

I think Warren would win easily. But I think anyone could beat Trump easily. But then I also thought Clinton would, which she only sorta did

It was always going to be close in 2016. Trump's biggest handicap in 2020 is that he has lost the "maybe it's just talk" thought process that enabled some middle of the road folks to come around and vote for him. Assuming the Dems do not nominate someone quite as polarizing and overloaded with baggage this time around, it's going to be tougher sledding.

Incumbency will be a factor, however.

Jester, all due respect and all that, you sound like it's 2014 and the US is the same place. You elected a dangerous buffoon, everyone wrings their hands but does nothing when fucking white supremacists are playing dog whistle games with said buffoon, and mass shootings in churches and schools are subject to victim shaming like a campus rape. You more or less abandon democratic allies for convenience in favor of countries that embrace your values of the bully wins. The old rules don't really apply anymore.

I may just be crabby today because this proposal I'm working on is a bitch.

I think we may need to put the US in timeout, so that it can reflect upon its selfish and reckless actions and the impact it has on this family.

No desert either!

Now, McPhee, considering the US has grown up to be the world's strongest ever MMA Champ, I'd ask you to go pick it up and put it in its room for timeout.

Thanks!

You are describing the systemic dangers of a political system with an executive independent of the legislative branch ... and be careful with the use of "you." The majority of American voters did not vote for Trump, and he has never truly held majority approval in opinion polls. The fact that the GOP had gone down an idiot path had been apparent for decades, and became acute following Obama's election. The fact that the 2016 was going to be close was an inescapable fact of partisanship ... and then you have the EC.

Of course, your response to me sounds like it's 2017, and not post-November 2018. The old rules have not disappeared, and be wary of assuming tectonic change due to one event (2016 election) that produced a somewhat goofy result due to a collection of factors. Trump and his brand of politics are not immune to political gravity, and the only thing that saved the last election for the GOP was the favorability of the senate map. Seriously: if Clinton had won in 2016, we would likely have been discussing the possibility of a 60 seat GOP majority in the senate.

Its understandable that jester still believes this is a normal course in politics and not what we in the rest of the world view it as.

What is normal? Are we all under the impression that US political history is tranquil and consistent?

Pre-WWII the US was an insular country internationally ... since 1941 it's been aggressively proactive internationally. That time period coincided with the Civil Rights Era and Vietnam ... which culminated in Nixon. Was he normal? Along came stability in Regan and Bush? Then the culture wars ratcheted up in the 90s and Gingrich v. Clinton. Bush-Cheney ... followed by financial meltdown.

What is the normal course?

Like what?

The vast majority of what has passed into law in the last two yearswould have passed under any GOP POTUS. Trump has been a remarkably ineffective POTUS because he doesn't know what he's doing and how to do it.

For example, he could have gotten his wall for the Dreamers and fucked it up.

I think what he is saying, and I don't mean to be presumptuous, is that many norms have dissolved into a catastrophic mixture of chaos and impromptu governance, which, in turn, will themselves become norms going forward. That is to say: irreparable damage.

Along with saying the word “fuck” at least three times throughout the meeting, the president bizarrely stated that he did not want to call the partial government shutdown a “shutdown,” according to the source. Instead, he referred to it as a “strike.” (Many of the federal employees affected by the weeks-long shutdown have been working without pay. That is essentially the opposite of a strike.)
