The Sens have traded Erik Karlsson and Francis Perron to SJ for a 1st rd pick in 2019 or 2020, C-Chris Tierny, 2nd rd pick 2019, C-Josh Norris, LW-Rudolfs Balcers and D-Dylan DeMelo

The second Hall was put on the market, a 1-1 would have made sense for Ottawa. We gave up a struggling #3 defenseman who topped six pts with EDM for the MVP last year. Im gonna guess Karlsson had a NMC?

TSN’s Darren Dreger talked to TSN1260’s Dustin Nielson: “These two clubs came real close to making a pretty big trade not that long ago and just couldn’t get it done, and that trade was Taylor Hall for, I think they finally got to a place where Ottawa was willing to consider Cody Ceci, so it would have been Hall for Ceci, but it had to be cleared in Ottawa through ownership and before they could get clearance Hall got traded to New Jersey for Larsson.”

Things I learned in here:

- Karlsson wanted to stay but management didn’t want to pay;

- Hall for Ceci was scuttled because Melnik couldn’t be reached over the phone;

- for some inexplicable reason, the sens traded their first for Duchesne and simulatiously are pursuing a rebuild strategy (in which they trade Karlsson).

Have I missed anything, Senate?

- Quantity is better than quality

- Dorion repeatedly promised the fans that the team would resign Karlsson, even though the team had already decided against that months earlier

- Ottawa had decided on a rebuild in February, yet in June they traded their best scorer, Mike Hoffman, for 28 year old, third line forward, Mikkel Boedker

- Still no first round pick in 2019 and some of the possible conditional picks in the Karlsson deal aren't until 2022

- Duchene and Stone are UFAs at the end of the season

- Cody Ceci is now Ottawa's number 1 defenceman

I'm never going to forget Melnyk threatening relocation at the outdoor game in Ottawa.

This ownership and management team keeps spiraling out of control. I hope they get heckled and booed wherever they go. They go to press events with smiles on and get softballs thrown at them from our spineless local sports news reporters. They're awful. They're the worst in the league and it's not close. 5 months ago the playoffs was the plan. Now rebuilding without our first round pick is the plan. Our best players still left will walk in 8 months.

A strange turn of events in 12 months. A beautiful late summer day with not a cloud in the sky. Eerily similar to the same weather and cloudless sky over Ontario on September 11th, 2001. OK, OK, no real comparison there, but the weather was the same!.

So I do believe they should have traded Karlsson. I actually believe their current two day old "plan" is a good one and one that they should have been on a couple years ago. At that point Karlsson is probably young enough to keep around. The Duchene trade is the killer, but if you look at it, Turris would have to be traded if he were on the Ottawa roster today. Duchene will fetch a first when he's traded before the deadline, but for Ottawa's sake they better hope they have a no pressure fun year where they win some games on a regenerated Craig Anderson and come in like 10th last or so. The first they get for Duch won't be that high so they're really feel the heat if they are a 15 win team.

I'm guessing they'll surprise. It will be a much different dressing room with zero pressure to play. They'll be better than terrible, just not sure how much.

There really is the best group of prospects in 15 years. Would have been nice to get a real blue chipper in the SJ deal. I will say Dorion caved for sure, like we're down to hours from camp and he trades him? Jesus. Trade him in a month so it doesn't look so bad. Of course, the offers in the summer were probably better. I won't say this is a good trade. It was never going to be good, but I do believe it was the proper thing to do with todays roster.

Trading Stone is going to hurt. A team is going to get a really under rated player there. I worry that the team here will be too young in a couple years but I guess it's not worth keeping around one of the big three to lead them. Might as well trade them all for players all around the same age, and when those players are all about 25-27, they won't have enough roster spots for them. It will be painful until we get there.

What I don't understand is the contract offer. It was so quiet after. It's like it had an expiry date in minutes on it. I'm reminded of the cartoon Inspector Gadget, where he'd always get a message from Chief Quimby what would "self-destruct" in seconds after Gadget read it. Maybe Dorion sent the same brand of explosive paper over to Karl. So weird, it didn't sound like that bad of an offer at 11x8. At least a starting point. I think you get him for 12 million, but I don't think it makes sense to pay a guy 12 on this roster.

Anyway, that contract offer was so quiet and no side has really given up much info on it and no Ottawa scribe (hack) has uncovered any details of it.

Hold tight folks, it always looks worse than it is.
