Marin Headlands, Golden Gate Park, Twin Peaks, Fishermans Wharf is touristy but good for a first timer, Alcatraz (buy tickets early), Sausalito and Fort Baker, Ride the cable car from the wharf to lombard st, irish coffee at The Buena Vista, the painted ladies, In n out on the embarcadero, Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, Dim Sum on Market St, Muir Woods, Mt. Tam, Coit Tower

Are you wanting to go to Napa Valley? Probably best to get a driver or get on a tour.

Yeah, renting a car would be best. Even if just for the day, you can combine it with going to Muir Woods to see the redwoods and maybe Mt. Tam. For the headlands, Go across the golden gate bridge towards Sausalito and take the first exit that isn't the golden gate visitor center. Best overlook is at Battery Spencer (google maps has quality directions), you can park your car there and walk around. It's spectacular. From there you can drive out toward the lighthouse. On the way back if you have the time the view from Moore Rd Pier is also pretty cool.

I'm flying in for a conference. I'll only have like one full day to myself, so I don't think I'll do Muir or anything like that.

I’d rent a car to cover the most ground. Could do twin peaks, Marin headlands, golden gate, and embarcadero easy still. If sticking to public transport you could do ferry building, wharf, trolly to Lombard st, union square, and maybe baseball game if Giants are in town.

Or just say fuck it and hop on tour/train to Napa for the day.
