Ottawa: Places to Eat/Beers and Snacks

Post #1 by chicpea » Mon Jan 07, 2019 10:00 pm

Hello everyone in the Ottawa Valley! I am pretty sure that it's a valley - I read it somewhere a few years ago. Perhaps in Air Canada's groundbreaking magazine, enRoute? Forgive me if you do not, in fact, live in a valley.

Anyway! I have to come to your city for work in a couple weeks and will be there for six days I think. Could you please show some of your famous Ontarioan hospitality and let me know of some good places to eat and also places to go for beers and a quiet chat in the evening.

I'm staying right downtown so I'm hoping to be able to walk everywhere or bus or taxi. The LCBO is 12 minutes on foot from my room.

I thank you very much in advance. Go, Snes, Go!

Haven't lived in Ottawa in nearly ten years, sadly, but Chez Lucien was always one of my favourite lowertown destinations.

Boozer, get in here and help out our good friend chic.

I was also going to suggest Chez Lucien.

Out of towners like the Metropolitan. It is only ok restaurant (and mediocre bar) but it is where Parliamentarians, reporters, and pundits tend to congregate (although they don't get shit faced there like they used to at Hys).

If you want to see some insufferable Sens fans who somehow still believe in the franchise, there is The Senate Tavern.

If you want a quiet place to have a drink, Clarence Street is nothing but bars, pubs, pour houses, and taverns. Just walk down it and go into the one that isn't crowded.

I like the Courtyard, Mill Street, and Tavern on the Falls for their patios in the summer. But this isn't the summer so that information, like the rest of this post, is useless to you.

It's been 12 years since I lived in Ottawa... Is the liquor dome still running? (I know that is not, but that was quite the place.)

You fellows have all been a great help. Thank you very much. Restaurants and "bistros" are very good. I'm very worried about my French and also about the cold. It's plus ten here.

I will also be in and around Ottawa soon.
I am, however, not worried about the French.

I lived in Ottawa for 6 years, never once needed French. The closest I got was talking with a roofing contractor about some roof framing detail and the use of "le plywood".

There's a nice explanation of why I don't want to grab a drink but let's leave it at that.

Oh, if you don't want to drink, nane,
we can drive.

Take me into the country.
Let me feel my youth.
Let me feel your youth.
Some regions have so many canals.
We could get a bite to eat.
I don't mind eating in your car.
It's messy but no one can trace us.

We have a place called Tim Hortons and it is great. In fact there are many of them on various blocks.

I once ate at a table next to Jean Chretien at Cathay on Albert. I believe it is now Sushi Kan 3 and I can't really vouch for the quality or say if it's better than Sushi Kan 1 or 2.

You never know which celebrities you might encounter in Ottawa, so be on the look out.

I stumbled off a bus last night looking for an LCBO that wasn't closed at 6 pm [!!] and, after ten minutes trudging through a non-ploughed back alley in my chic, leather sneakers, ended up nearly frost-bitten in front of a small establishment, the soft, glowing lights of which beckoned me inside to warm. It was nearly empty save for two pairs of people sat at opposite ends of the entire place. I sat in an old, green high-chair at the bar by myself and looked helplessly at the two young females ostensibly working there. The name of this place was the Hintonburg Public House, and it was very warm indeed. I ordered a cider and chatted luxuriously with the cuter of the two servers. Yes, she had been to Vancouver. TWICE. She really liked it. After a while I bid adieu and promised her I would return one night. I will not. But my memories of that warmth will never evacuate my cold, lonely heart.

I'm pretty sure that first LCBO you are referring to is the one at the World Exchange Plaza, which exists solely to get alcoholic civil servants through the day.

I assure you, dear Senator, the World Exchange Plaza LCBO closes at 6 pm and is not even open on Wednesdays. I know this because I went there on Monday and was helped by a deceptively strong young man named Quinley, whom I had a hard time believing was unbetrothed - and I told him as much.
