Which Way Do You Turn?

Post #1 by chicpea » Thu Aug 08, 2019 11:52 pm

I do not want to be presumptuous - for it is the intellectual vice of those children people seem to have milling about them, jobless and everywhere and uncouth in my opinion - but I do have a guess as to which way you turn when you leave your house or home or hovel or hut each day (presuming you leave each day, which is what these children I am continually surrounded by and enveloped with think you do). I do not know how else to ask you but to be as plain and direct and as forthcoming and straight-shooting, honest, frank, upfront, (and, quite honestly, rude into parameters which would have gotten me beaten into juices as a middling youth) as possible with you people, whom I consider confidantes in times of peril and distress and also undress. The question is this (and I did mention it briefly in the introduction): Which way do you turn when you leave your home each day? I turn right, which is also due north, for that is where my bus arrives and people are forced to be there so it's a great place for me to meet them.

That kinda read like a Pynchon novel, only much much shorter and to the point.

The answer to the question also depends from which door I leave. That’s right, I have a multi-exit point abode.

I consider you don't leave your "home" until you are outside of the property line, dog. Not the door.

If you are sitting in the back yard, or watering a plant or in the driveway, you are still home.

So answer the damned question.

Great. Then consider your pool as part of my home now. Please continue to clean it. I will use it at my discretion.

Chickenpoo said: “which way you turn when you leave your house or home or hovel or hut”.

‘Home’ is a somewhat vague term. It’s meaning is the ‘place you reside’ more or less and the delimitation of such place will depend on context and intent. Here, he’s clearly enumerating physical shelter like places. But, just to humour you, let’s say he wasn’t. Let say he meant “physical place of residence, all land on which your physical place of residence sits, physical place of residence but of different type, physical place of residence but of yet another type”.....the question would have still let it open to answer for any one of the types of places enumerated. Which I did.

Bottom line, what we have here is that his question was poorly worded. Asking the same question regarding possibly contradicting places. I played on that. And I was right. So there.

How would my calling my house my home transfer property rights on other land and installations I own over to you? This is just silly!

Dog's obviously wrong nitpicking aside, I'm not sure how to answer this. If I were pulling forward out of the driveway it would be easy, left. But I normally back out of my driveway, which means I go like three feet to the left (would be right if I were going forward) then take off to what was the right when I started. So... left?

You're very obviously wrong.

Just because your rich person perspective associates hovels or huts with shelters instead of these elements being an entire "home" doesn't mean you then get to modify what his question was.

But, much more worryingly, my brain actually operates in this manner. When I read the question, my first thought was for my first turn after exiting my front door, which has to be left as that is the only route that lets me pass without having to jump over hedges and other like-stuff. But then, I thought, what if I was just leaving from the garage, which I often do. That, naturally, led me to think “oh, did he mean which side I turn on the street”? Then I thought, what if my yard also gave way to the greater outside world other than to the front of the house. Then I thought, “this is so arbitrary, where you initially turn (regardless of the place of measurement). The first turn’s possibilities will inevitably be limited by the physical constraints of the immediate environment (such as the street’s directionality or, in my case, hedges planted years ago without my consent by my wife). One that generally will head north on their journey, may have to make a quick east-bound turn before reorienting himself in the predominant direction of his journey. Did he mean the initial turn (even if wholly inconsequential), or did he mean which way you turn to face the predominant orientation of your journey. If the latter, how short/inconsequently must the first (or first few???!) turns be in order for it to be to reasonable to disregard in order to answer the actual pith and substance of his query. Faced with this impossible quagmire of a question, I chose to restrict my answer in the manner that I did.

I consciously made that choice, greg, on the premise that defending the conundrum raised by the multi exit-points of a house was easier than for a piece of land (even if both are quite obviously possible, the plot arrangements next to my piece of land makes it that I only have have an exit towards the front street -and I did not wish to lie, greg, by pretending I had an exit route from my plot of land that is other than towards the front street). Yet, the question lacked precision as to what it was referring to (ie. he states, black on white, “house”, “home”, “hut” and so on), so restricting the answer to the house seemed the most surefire way to raise the dilemma of the possible multiple exit points inherent in his question but not addressed in his available answers without getting dragged into a protracted debate on whether there were, in fact, multiple possible exit points.

You see? All this was to avoid long, protracted, convoluted posts. Who would argue that my house does not have multiple exit points? Who would argue that a house wasn’t part of his question when he specifically named it? WHO? What kind of sick people would do that, greg??!

I don’t know how any of you cowboys can be reckless enough to venture an answer without any more specifics as to the rotational axis with regards to which he is asking the question. This is pure lunacy!

My answer is right.

I’ll tell you which way I turn at a later date.

I'm team Craig on this. Back out a little left before driving what would be right if one looks from the front door / windows.
