I love how Canadians appear to be on top of US politics more than most of us. I know for myself I’m so disenfranchised and cynical I can’t believe anything I hear from the talking heads and how corrupt our government is. I’m down to golfing as much as possible for the rest of my life while encouraging my son to have a global point of view and hoping he can study abroad and ultimately stay there.

Because Canadian politics is so boring. Canadian politics is like Olympic wrestling and American politics is like professional wrestling.

Most Canadians know more about US politics than they do Canadian. It's a little odd, but you have to keep in mind that we consume US media like 90% of the time too, so there's generally more exposure to US politics.

When I was in grad school in NYC I had a few Canadian classmates. Back then they knew more about our shit than we did and all were very involved with local politics when they were younger with regards to volunteering and whatnot. I think it’s just a cultural difference between the two nations as we don’t place much value on politics unless you have parents that emphasis it.

And anyway, the real action is in Provincial politics these days. In BC, that' always been the case.

It's a combination of being a more politically engaged country + our politics being very very ho-hum. Scandals are pretty rare. I'd bet our boring politics is the result of an engaged voter base but I can't really back that up. It's just that you guys have people spending millions on defeatist/deterministic/fatalistic messaging and other voter suppression tactics that produce an apathetic voter base. Ours is pretty apathetic, but not that bad.

What’s the process like to become a Canadian citizen from the US if you’re say 22 years old? If my boy studied at McGill or someplace else in Canada for a year would that help his cause?

he'd get a student visa and then probably have to go home. i think there is a point system to becoming a canadian citizen. or at least there used to be. i don't think it's very hard, certainly not as hard as a green card. i think, if anything, it's more about waiting until you get approved.

Ya, you apply for your PR first, that's points based. If he goes to school here, and provides something to the country, he'll get it. My brother's girlfriend, now fiancee got in that way.

we have a permanent residency program that you can get as a student. I was in grad school with Indian guys that had it, but you need like 5+ years on top of that to get citizenship

HAHA no, I live it Ottawa + work in academia but if I lived in NB there's a very good chance I'd work for either the gov, Irving, McCain's, or the Oland's. The province is poor as fuck and has some of the wealthiest families in Canada HQed there.

I'd live there in a heartbeat, but it's pretty unrealistic.

I work in tech. Even before covid, I knew young 20 and 30 something's who were trying to set up their lives so they could work remotely and move to remote places. I know one guy who set himself up to live on a farm in Prince Edward county, and I knew a girl who was actively planning the move to a little nothing town in Quebec just north of Ottawa. I think that over the next few decades we're going to see a bit of a reversal of the flock to the cities that we saw in pretty much the entire 20th century. Like if you can pull a Toronto developer salary, so like 100k or so, but live in Nova Scotia or new Brunswick? It's a great way to get a pretty outstanding quality of life.

So long story short, I could totally see people moving out there to work soon. I'd love to do it too, get a place right on the water? Outstanding!

A lot of people on my team already work remote full time (Buffalo, NC & NH to name a few). I’d love to move out west to Wyoming or Montana. Time difference would shake things up a little though

One of my former subordinates has been applying for remote jobs for the past year. She wants to live in Belize. She just got accepted to an online JD program at Tulane.

a lot of people will assume the safety measures were an overreaction, or that those following them are "sheep", until someone close to them dies. particularly those in the midwest or Cali where they haven't been hit hard yet

probably going to pass 100,000 deaths in the US this weekend by the way. Happy Memorial Day

Most of these videos have a common theme. Extreme whiteness. My favorite part of it all is that the people in Trinity Bellwoods will be the keyboard warrior, black lives matter brigade, but then they're the first to go flaunt their white privilege. I'm not saying minority groups haven't done the same, because I've seen black Americans do it, ie Chicago video but, most of the videos are of white people.

I'm glad the comments section is mostly filled with people who are pissed off at this behavior. The mayor of Toronto said the cops will be giving out fines there from now on, let's see if he actually pulls through.
